EMQ’s with IAN BLURTON’S FUTURE NOW

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Canadian Rock band Ian Blurton’s Future Now. Huge thanks to Ian for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Ian Blurton, guitarist/singer for Future Now. We started playing together roughly a year ago. I made a solo record called “Signals Through The Flames” using some of my favourite Toronto musicians and needed a band to play the songs so I called on 2 guests from that record (Anna/Glenn) and added guitarist Aaron Goldstein to help me with the many guitar parts.
How did you come up with your band name?
Future Now is a song by The MC5 (one of my fav bands of all time).
What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
I’m from Canada and while I’m not a full-on metalhead (I say that out of respect to my friends who are) I can tell you we have a very vibrant scene here with originators ala Voivod still releasing incredible records and newer bands like Tomb Mold (who blew me away live), Cauldron etc. keeping it alive.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single or Video)
We have 2 releases upcoming. Our 1st 7″ (Yeah Right Records) comes out on May 4 and our LP will be released by Pajama Party on June 7.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Jimi Hendrix is probably my all-time fav but there have been many. I have always loved Mountain, Black Sabbath, Budgie, Blue Cheer..!
What first got you into music?
I’d say probably seeing The Monkees on TV as a young kid.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Motorpsycho for sure. I love how adventurous/prolific they are.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Woodstock right before Hendrix so I could see his set. Currently I’d say Roadburn, it seems like such a great community.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Nothing super weird, mostly just awesome things including paintings, homemade chocolates etc.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Live your life by your own rules.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Jimi Hendrix so I could see him live once!
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Music is my life so I try to enjoy all the aspects of it and let the positive outweigh the negative.
I get to play with incredible musicians and am honoured they are willing to give up their time to do so.
I’m not crazy about loading 4x12s into 3rd floor venues.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I think it would be more than one thing but I think streaming not paying enough would be a good start.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
The Damned – “The Black Album”
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
I like them all but prefer vinyl as I grew up with it.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
I’ve been playing live since 1982 so I’ve been very lucky to play a lot of great shows. Recently I’d say the 2nd Future Now show with Biblical/Whoop-szo. It was good vibes and killer bands and everyone played great.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Working with animals.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Salvador Dali, Hunter S Thompson, Robert Anton Wilson, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Robt Williams
What’s next for the band?
Our 7″ and LP release parties and then we are doing a Canadian tour out to Sled island Festival (one of the best in Canada).and back.
