EMQ’s with NOVACROW
Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Ever Metal favourites, Liverpool based Hard Rock/Metal/Sleaze band Novacrow. Huge thanks to Vocalist/Guitarist Kitty Staunton for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
I’m Kitty, I’m lead vocals and guitar for Novacrow. We have been making noise and shaking booty since 2013 and always strive to put on a show to make your genitals quiver.
How did you come up with your band name?
Our guitarist Jonyx was helping somebody else with finding a band name by trying out combining random words from the dictionary with animals. Luckily Novacrow just seemed perfect for us.
What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
We’re based in England and the metal scene here is huge and diverse. We have some really awesome festivals here and a there is a massive variety of music lovers.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single or Video)
We released Criminal Mastermind EP late 2018, which has gone down a storm. Each of the tracks provide a different listening experience, with plenty of heavy riffs, funky choruses and vivid themes. We also released two coinciding videos, a wacky mobster caper and a B-movie werewolf extravaganza, so be sure to check them out!
Who have been your greatest influences?
A tonne to choose from, but some of my biggest personal influences have been Tairrie B of My Ruin, Joan Jett, Grog of Die So Fluid, Otep, Jack off Jill and Kittie. Discovering these awesome ferocious women when I was an early teen definitely encouraged me to get into music and aided my confidence in general.
What first got you into music?
My Dad has a great taste in music and has influenced me a lot. I particularly remember first hearing Nirvana and getting super excited. I can’t remember exactly what drew me to it, but I have always wanted to write songs.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Oh man, this is an impossible question as there are TONNES of choices. Potentially Trent Reznor, Devin Townsend or Bret Autrey.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
We played Metal Days in Slovenia, which was absolutely awesome and we’d LOVE to go back. Alongside that, Graspop, Wacken or Download would be incredible.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
I think we’d rather not say, in case it encourages them and they try and send us anything else hahaha!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Thank you for being so gloriously supportive and making all of the sleepless nights totally worth it!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Peter Steele, Type O Negative, without a doubt.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love writing and performing more than I can put into words.Hard to think of anything I ‘hate’, but being in a band certainly takes a lot of work, patience and perseverance- which definitely isn’t for everyone!
Scratch that, no, lugging all the gear out at 5am after a gazillion hour car journey is the worst thing ever!
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
The fact that it’s almost impossible to make a living from it!
(Though I do love how pretty much anyone has the means of sharing their music across the world).
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Life is Killing Me” – Type O Negative
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
I like a mix of CDs, downloads and streaming. I’m a big fan of making playlists for every possible occasion. I’m one of those people that spends like 20 minutes “curating” a perfect soundtrack for a 10 minute walk.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
We’ve been lucky to play so many awesome places, with some really amazing bands.
For me, our latest EP launch was seriously fun. We wanted an excuse to use all of the random props we have accumulated from filming the videos, so we came on dressed as mobsters, throwing money (with our faces on) to the audience. We had a werewolf roaming the crowd, tonnes of fake blood and loads of freebies to give out. We had a great time.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I used be a regular music reviewer, so maybe that. (I’d still be itching to be onstage though).
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Bob Ross’ ghost, Terry Crews, Benji Webbe, Cassandra Peterson and Tim Curry!
We would have skeleton butlers to wait on us and for entertainment we would have a dance mat competition.
What’s next for the band?
We’ve just been putting the finishing touches on a new single, which will be zooming very shortly into your ears! Keep your eyes peeled on our website and social media for more information.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?
A cake in a cunning disguise.
