EMQ’s with PICTURE
Hi Everyone. Welcome to a new short, sharp and sweet EMQ’s interview with Dutch Rock/Metal legends Picture! Huge thanks to guitarist Jan Bechtum for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the Band?
I am Jan Bechtum and I am the first (and last) guitarist of the Dutch metal band PICTURE.
How did you come up with your band name?
In 1978 Rinus, our bass player, came up with that name based on the title of a favourite album from ELP: “Pictures At An Exhibition”.
What country are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
From Holland and the metal scene is not very big anymore unfortunately, but we get to play all over the world so it’s fine.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single or Video)
The new studio album called “Wings” that will be released on Aug. 16th 2019 by Pure Steel Records.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Personally that would be Ritchie Blackmore.
What first got you into music?
Deep Purple’s “Made In Japan”.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Wacken Open Air! The biggest metal meeting anywhere in the world!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
I’d rather keep that to myself hahaha!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Thanks for sticking with us for more than 40 years!!!
If you could bring one Metal/Rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I like the excitement of playing live. I hate all the waiting in dressing rooms before we finally go on stage.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
More support and honesty! Other people have earned a lot more from our music than ourselves. That’s just wrong.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Deep Purple – “Made In Japan”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Rotterdam New Pop in 1981 (more than 8000 fans were there)!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
My wife Linda, Alice Cooper, Doro, James Hetfield and Graham Oliver!
What’s next for the band?
A great gig at Bang Your Head festival in Germany (This took place on July 12th) and the CD-release on Aug 16th.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
If you are a metal fan: Thanks again for all these years!
If you are a musician: keep rocking and stay true!
