Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Cambridge, UK based Metal band Far From Refuge! Huge thanks to them for taking part!

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

We are Far From Refuge and we play a mix of progressive, technical and melodic metalcore!

Joél: I conceptualised the project many years ago, and after going through a few iterations found a group of talented people with the same drive and ambition, who also turned out to be pretty alright people to boot – which is a bonus!

How did you come up with your band name?

The name comes from a record by a band called “God is an Astronaut”. We felt it invoked a sense of helplessness and vastness. Imagine just existing, alone in the void of space. We love that.

What country are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We’re based in the UK. The country has produced some incredible modern metal bands (Bring Me The Horizon, Architects, Tesseract – to name a few). There is some insane talent on the underground circuit as well. But our band members hail from all over originally, including Germany, Hungary, & Sri Lanka.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single or Video)

Our debut, self-titled, EP, which was released in February this year!

Who have been your greatest influences?

InMe, Periphery, Trivium, Architects, Rosetta, God is an Astronaut and so many more!

What first got you into music?

Joél: I can’t remember not being into music! I have very early memories of jamming to Michael Jackson tunes…

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Joél: After hearing the new Marshmello/ A Day To Remember tune, I’d love to do a genre mashup like that! Maybe Infected Mushroom, Deadmau5 or Scooter (!) are free…?

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Rock am Ring!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Nothing weird yet, luckily!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Let us know what you want to hear more of!

If you could bring one Metal/Rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Joél: Dimebag!
Suran: Chuck Shuldiner

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Joél: I love the creative process. I’m happiest when I’m writing songs and bringing ideas to life. I dislike that there are so many people who try to make money by exploiting aspiring musicians.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Joél: No more singer/songwriters.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Joél: Fenix TX – “Lechuza”
Suran: Wintersun – “Wintersun”

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Joél: Streaming or CD.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Every time we have played the Portland Arms in Cambridge it has been insane!

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Joél: Playing Video games..!

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Joél: Let’s get some great songwriters and producers together and make weird music. Lindsey Buckingham, Trent Reznor, Dave Grohl, Imogen Heap and Timbaland.

What’s next for the band?

Joél: We’re releasing a few standalone singles in 2019, and plan to start recording our first album early next year.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Joél: Biscuit. Pro tip, get the cheap Sainsbury’s version, they are literally the same.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks for having us! Feel free to hit us up any time on our social media platforms, we love talking to fans!
