EMQ’s with Glasghote

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Portland, Oregon Doom Metal band Glasghote! Huge thanks to bassist Chad Johnson for taking part!

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Chad Johnson, bass. Glasghote started with Jake Shaffer (guitar and vocals) and Jordan Huston (drums) playing in the basement of the house they rented. I worked with Jordan at a restaurant in Portland, OR. After a Labor Day company party with plenty of Black Sabbath, Graveyard, and beer we decided I should go to their house and play bass. We started writing together and haven’t looked back since.

How did you come up with your band name?

One of my closest friends Jon Frias came up with it. Sounded gross and heavy just like the music we were creating.

What country are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

Portland, OR USA. The metal scene in Portland and the states is absolutely amazing. It’s a closet knit community where everyone has each other’s backs.

What is your latest release (Album, EP, Single, Video)?

Our latest release is the “Rite of the Siren” full length out on Doom Stew Records. We are getting ready to release our split with Hound the Wolves on August 2nd. (Out Now)

Who have been your greatest influences?

Thou, Sleep, The Clash, and everyone we meet at shows. Sabbath worship!

What first got you into music?

The joy of playing instruments! Even as children we’ve all been music lovers, I can’t speak for the other guys, but I know my parents have a home video somewhere of me singing along to KISS while playing air guitar on a tennis racket.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Matt Pike

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Roadburn or Psycho!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

…still waiting for the weird gift!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

We love you all so much.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

We love all of the amazing people we’ve met while playing music. We’ve met some lifelong friends. We hate unloading and loading gear. Especially in Portland when it’s pissing rain on you.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Egos, the damn egos that you encounter! Be humble.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Jordan: Jimi Hendrix – “Band Of Gypsys”
Jake: The Clash – “London Calling”
Chad: Metallica – “Kill ‘em All”

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Our best has by far been our record release show last October at Tonic Lounge (we will miss you!) A close second was Ceremony of Sludge (thank you Justin).

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Wishing I was playing music. I’d probably be much better at gardening.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Matt Pike, Tony Iommi, Cliff Burton (can we bring him back too???), Joan Jett and Michael Bay so we can all make fun of him for his terrible movies!

What’s next for the band?

Skies the limit! Tour, tour, tour! Jump on as many festivals as possible. Keep recording with Billy Anderson.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Bandcamp! We need to be better at social media.

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you to everyone who has ever downloaded, bought, listened to, or had any type of interaction with Glasghote. We truly appreciate every single person we’ve encountered. You make this so much fun for us.
