Interview with 27 Days
NozFest 2019, 10/08/2019
By Lotty Whittingham

The pressure is often high when opening a festival and 27 Days did well to get the crowds going as they started pouring in for NozFest. Lotty Whittingham spoke to Jordan Watts and Steven Speck about their music, live show and their side project Velvet Rose.

So first off introduce yourselves to the readers?

Jordan: My name is Jordan Watts and I am the front man of the band. I am the spandex wearing wanker.

Steven: I’m Steven, I’m the lead guitarist. Apparently I am the egotistical one, although I can’t top what Jordon has said.

For those who haven’t heard of 27 Days, please describe your sound?

Steven: Hard Rock, Glam, Sleaze, Loud, all of that really.

Jordan: I would also add the words energy and performance based.

Having just watched your show, energy is certainly high on the list. It looked like the live show went down well?

Steven: It was a great crowd for an opening slot. I was quite surprised. It was nice. It felt great onstage but when you’re into the moment, mistakes can often happen without you realising it as you lose the worry of making mistakes.

Jordan: We were fully prepared to play for a man and his dog but it was nice to have people in the audience.

I suppose for opening acts; the pressure is higher for them to get the crowds warmed up. Did you guys feel that pressure?

Jordan: Not really, I felt it was up to us to set the bar.

Steven: That and just have a good time. That’s really important to us.

I liked your cover of The Darkness song, have you performed covers previously?

Steven: We used to.

Jordan: We have a whole back catalogue containing two hours’ worth of covers that we don’t do anymore. We might chuck one in now and again.

Steven: It depends what the crowds want. If it’s for a specific where they’re looking for specific covers!

Jordan: If people don’t know who you are, a cover is a great way to show audiences what you’re about.

What are your personal favourite songs to cover?

Jordan: ‘Purple Rain’ by Prince. That is an absolute favourite of mine.

Steven: I don’t know if I can pick. There’s too many… I really like playing ‘Kickstart My Heart’ by Motley Crue.

From what I understand, you two are currently working on another project as well as 27 Days.

Steven: As well as the band, we do our duo set. We’re called Velvet Rose and that is mainly covers and that’s a money making thing on the side.

Jordan: Originally, we were playing a lot of venues that were smaller. Some of them got in touch and couldn’t fit the band in or didn’t have the budget for the whole band. So we said to them, if they couldn’t fit us in as a whole band we could just come in as a duo. It’s exactly what the band does but with two acoustics.

Do you play events as well like for birthdays etc?

Jordan: Yes, we play a lot of events. We’re doing a wedding tonight. We don’t have a free weekend until January.

Steven: We have some time off over Christmas.

What does the rest of the year hold for 27 Days?

Jordan: If you contact the band’s Facebook page (see below) you can message the page. We have limited edition copies of the album. It has booklets with all the lyrics and a leopard print CD.

Steven: We have our new single Dead Man Walking out at the moment. We played that this afternoon.

Jordan: You can find that on Spotify, iTunes etc.

Steven: We also have our last home turf show on Friday 6th September. We’re moving to Brighton for university courses.

Jordan: The band are re-locating. So one last headline show in Bournemouth. Tickets can be found on Event Brite.

Big Thanks to 27 Days for the interview
