Interview with Gutlocker
Rabidfest 2019, 18/08/2019
By Sheri Bicheno
At Rabidfest Ever Metal’s ‘roving reporter’ Sheri decided to interview Gutlocker who she knows. What followed wasn’t really an interview more of a free for all…sort of…so here goes!
This interview allegedly took place on Day Three of the Festival and will possibly self-destruct in 10 seconds!!
Sheri: So you are now known affectionately as “Stomach Padlock”…?
Gutlocker: Cool. Says who?
Sheri: Mark! And Mark is boss today (Mark Gibbs – Rabidfest director)
Gutlocker: We can go with that.
(Mark then makes an appearance…)
Dean: Heeeey! And he’s got his patch on! He listened to me last weekend…
(Mark is heard in the distance…: Yeah You’ve spelled it wrong. It should be spelled Stomach Padlock!)
Sheri: See? I told ya!
Dean: Aaaaah! Cork knocker mate! Get back to Peaky Blinders! Hahaha!
Pete: He’s got razors in the back of his hat haha.
Dean: Anyway this interviews going well! Hahahaha!
Mark: Whatever they say about me, be pretty sure it’s a lie.
Craig: Mark’s a really nice guy…
Sheri: So what have you guys been up to?
Craig: We have been doing relentless gigging…
Craig: Erm, pissed my Mrs off in the process.
Craig: Lots of writing.
Dean: Lots of planning!
Ben: Booking a tour.
Craig: We’ll be starting to record again soon. We’ve been listening towards inspiration so we’ve been listening to Coldplay…
Dean: But like the Beatles, we’re gonna carry on anyway hahaha.
Ben: That’s it, go all Greenday.
Sheri: Any more shows you’ve got coming up?
Dean: Welllllll, tell ‘em, Ben!
Ben: Well…we’ve got today!
Gutlocker: Which is gonna be good!
Craig: And what is today, for those that aren’t here?
Dean: It’s Rabidfest, didn’t you know?
Pete: And then next month we’ve got a proper tour. We’re gonna do 9 days.
Dean: 1,000 miles in 9 days.
Craig: And Unearthed Festival in October as well.
Sheri: Ah I’m looking forward to that!
Craig: Which is after our tour! We’ll give you the tour dates as well so we can say what else we’ve got after it.
Ben: I thought I was the one explaining this!! Jesus Christ! Hahaha!
Pete: No one asked me to say anything! Hahaha!
Ben: We’re doing a tour. We’re gonna be doing… Dudley, Leeds, Hull, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bolton, Nottingham then that’s it… 9 days on the trot. It’s gonna be good!
Pete: It’s gonna be long.
Craig: 9 days back to back from the start date of 20th September.
Dean: It will be the most time we’ve ever spent together as a band…
Sheri: Don’t be smacking each other in the face hahaha!
Craig: No we’ll just kick each other haha!
Dean: We wanna say a big thanks to Mark Walsh.
Ben: Big up to Mark.
Pete: He’s pretty much booked the entire tour for us. He’s a proper legend.
Ben: So thank you Mark. We started it and then he stepped in and said “you guys need to do a tour! I’ll do a tour with you.”
Pete: And we were like “Can we go…north of Watford?” haha!
Ben: Can we see life outside the M25?
Sheri: A bit up the M1 a bit.
Pete: We’ve not really played beyond sort of Manchester so sorta visiting Leeds, Newcastle, Hull is gonna be epic.
Ben: And then we have Unearthed Festival in October, which is in Birmingham at the Flapper.
Pete: And that’s gonna be good. With Abhorrent Decimation, Dog Tired… a whole bunch of bands. Recall the Remains… Then we got a couple of other shows towards the end of the year.
Ben: We’ve got a Halloween gig that we’re trying to book but we will get back to you on that!
Dean: We have one band and we have a venue. It may just have to be us doing a 3 hour set, with an hour set list three times haha!
Pete: And not necessarily in the right order.
Craig: Yeah we’re gonna play 100 songs where we play them and they’re 10 seconds each.
Sheri: Ah like Mad Spanner? Haha!
Pete: Mad Spanner are playing a gig with us during our tour. They’ll be in Dudley.
Craig and Ben: DUDLEY!
(All in a typical Dudley accent)
Pete: It’s gonna be really good.
Ben: The whole idea is just for us to kinda branch out and get our name out a bit!
Craig: Unearthed Festival – Oh, they’ve actually named this after my mum and opened their legs at The Flapper…
(There’s a silence and then burst of laughter from everyone.)
Craig: Hi, Mum!
Sheri: Let’s talk about your Jamiroquai cover. That’s really taken off at the moment. Very much loved.
Craig: We did it because we love the song, the song itself is awesome and to listen to it and think that it could be a metal riff would make it sound amazing. So we had a go on it and we did it and the first few times we announced it, people were like “right ok” and then we played it live a few times and people actually really like it.
So we decided to do it as a song, record it and just as a stand along single and then..!
Sheri: Then you got silly with it haha?
Dean: Yeah we got carried away haha.
Craig: We were bouncing ideas for a video and just thought fuck it and got Mike Worsley from Outright Resistance to be the Dinosaur…
Shout out to Leigh as well, we’re so happy with the results for with what he did for Deeper Underground. It’s surpassed our expectations and knew it was going to be good but with the quality he put into it, we’re coming to him to for the start of our album towards the end of this year.
Pete: He also recorded Cry Havoc so shout out to Leigh from Remnant!
Sheri: Can you talk to us about the album yet?
Craig: We have around 7 songs ready and we’re working on the 8th track – there is a good chunk of it that you haven’t heard us play live yet, we’re actually holding back on a lot of the latest stuff. We were pushing to play new stuff in gigs for this year but we thought we would hold back a bit and actually put it towards the album so that it sinks into people’s skulls a bit more and then when the album has been out for a while, we can then bring that stuff to life.
Pete: So we’re holding a lot of material back, we wanna play it all at once.
Ben: Speaking about videos as well, we have a couple of concepts and we’re thinking of going a little bit out there with some of it so…
Dean: Yeah, there will be more videos to come!
Pete: Sorry we’re very vague with the details at the moment but we don’t want to give away too much haha.
Craig: The video’s that we have done have been a bit different obviously and Deeper Underground had a bit more of a story driven concept to it. So, we’ve come up with different ideas to try to make them not as similar to videos that we’ve already done – if these ideas pull they’ll be pretty cool!
Sheri: Give us some advice!
Pete: Turn up on time!
Ben: What’s the thought for the day?
Craig: Thought for the day? If you suffer from a condition called Self-Entitlement, don’t be in a band.
Pete: Also – don’t chuck around like – drum bits and stands and amps that don’t belong to you.
Dean: Whatya looking at me for!?!
Ben: You can never have too many pedals.
Craig: Stick around and watch all the bands. Even if you’re an opener band!
Pete: Spare pants. Be nice to your sound guy – because chances are he won’t make you sound like shit.
Gutlocker Joke: Man walks into a bar with a giraffe. Barman says, sorry mate you can’t leave that lying there. Man says… that’s not a lion, it’s a giraffe.
Sheri: Thank you so much guys!
