Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Swedish Metal band My Dark Rift! Huge thanks to bassist Mattias Lekborn for taking part!

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

The band My Dark Rift The band consists of vocalist David Sundbom (ex-Skiller), guitarists Kristoffer Folin (Plan Three) and David Szücs (Degradead), bassist Mattias Lekborn (Furiam) and drummer Kenneth Holborn (ex-Degradead). With all members sharing a common love of hard rock and metal, there is room for both a nostalgic nod towards the thrash era of the 80’s as well as the melodic death scene of more modern times.

How did you come up with your band name?

The band’s name is taken from the space phenomenon (The Dark Rift) as it seemed fitting to the music we wanted to make. (And we also needed a cool band name.)

What country are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are a band based out of Stockholm, Sweden and the Metal scene here is great. We have A lot of really great Metal acts in Sweden like In Flames, At The Gates and Entombed just to name a few. Even the local talent in Stockholm is crazy good so we are very fortunate!

What is your latest release (Album, EP, Single, and Video?)

Well we are very new to the scene and so far we have only released two songs ‘Make Me
Stronger’ and ‘Devils Thunder’. With ‘Make Me Stronger we got a huge welcome from the metal audience and it made its way to number 1 on the Swedish iTunes chart!

Who have been your greatest influences?

Our main influences are too many to even mention .We all just have a huge love for metal music in all forms. From Death to NWOBHM to just about everything in-between. There is so much great music out there.

What first got you into music?

Well I can’t speak for everyone in the band but for me it was hearing Metallica for the first time at the age of 5 maybe. Somewhere around that time and I haven’t looked back since.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Off the top of my head Ghost would be really interesting or why not Foo Fighters or
something unexpected.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Just one!? We want to play ALL of them.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I haven´t gotten so much weird stuff yet maybe because we are a pretty new band but I
have received clothes, pictures and one time a stone.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Well I think the one message I would like to send is thank you. Without anyone listening to what we do we would not be able to do it to the extent that we do so thank you and we hope to meet every single one of you somewhere on the road.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Freddie Mercury I think he had a lot more in him or the brothers Dimebag and Vinnie of

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

What I enjoy most is making new music and playing it in front of people. What I hate most is all the waiting you need to do before you can take the stage!

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Well I would definitely give us a better tour budget for starters. Nah, but I don’t really know. The industry keeps changing all the time so it’s hard to even keep up as it is!

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Pantera – “Cowboys From Hell”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl of course!

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The next one!

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Well for me I would be doing a lot more of my other passion in life, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Why only 5 let’s make it 75 and then we could have a real party.

What’s next for the band?

In August/Sept we are aiming for the next release and after that we are going to start booking some shows.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Haha I don’t even know what a Jaffa cake is. But for the sake of it… of course it is a biscuit!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Make sure to follow us on social media if you want to know what we are up to and where
the next show will be and so on. Other than that I wish you all a great day
