EMQ’s with WINTER STORM

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with West Midlands based Melodic Metal band Winter Storm! Huge thanks to Lead Vocalist/Guitarist Hannah Fieldhouse and Keyboardist John Bradley for taking part!

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hannah: Hello! My name is Hannah and I okay lead guitar and sing for Winter Storm. We (Hannah and Wayne) formed the band in 2008 originally, and have grown with our sound ever since.
John: My name’s John and I play keyboards for Winter Storm and have also played the drums for them in the past. The band was started in 2008 in Stourbridge by Hannah and Wayne. Over the course of the last 11 years, we’ve had a few member changes, released three albums, a few music videos, and played gigs all over the country and a few in Europe.

How did you come up with your band name?

Hannah: It was just something Wayne and I liked and honestly there’s not much more to it haha!

What country are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

Hannah: We are based in the West Midlands of the UK. The rock and metal scene is strong here, with lots of sub-genres and interesting venues. There are a wide range of sub-genres and some phenomenal underground bands.
John: I am from England, UK and the rock/metal scene here is awesome; we’re the home of heavy metal after all! The underground scene is full of amazing acts who deserve so much more exposure and success than they have.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single or Video)

John: We are releasing our third album “Relapse in Time” next month on 11th October. We’re also holding a launch show the following evening at the Slade Rooms in Wolverhampton.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Hannah: That’s a tough one. Some of my biggest influences would be Rush, Iron Maiden, Eva Cassidy, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Tesseract, Opeth, Nightwish. The list goes on. With songwriting I’m often influenced by films, or books as well.
John: If we’re talking only music here, then I have many for different reasons. I put that down to being a multi-instrumentalist. If I had to limit it to one person per instrument, I would pick: Joey Jordison (Drums), Les Claypool (Bass), Nuno Bettencourt (Guitar), Janne Wirman (Keys), Freddie Mercury (Vocals).

What first got you into music?

Hannah: I originally started by playing the Lyre, which is a smaller version of a harp. I basically begged my mom to let me learn acoustic guitar and she eventually gave in. I hated practicing that too, but one day I had a chat with myself and decided to work harder.
John: I honestly can’t pinpoint anything specific as I don’t remember a time when I haven’t been into music or trying to play an instrument. It sounds very cliché but it’s always been a part of who I am.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Hannah: Wow that is a tough one. I’d of loved to have done a collaboration with Prince, in a fantasy world haha.
John: I would love to do something with Devin Townsend or Nightwish, whether that was live or in the studio.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Hannah: I would love the opportunity to return to Bloodstock, Wacken or another European Metal festival such as Metal Female Voices Fest, or FemME Belgium would be insane.
John: Winter Storm played Bloodstock several years ago at a time when I wasn’t in the band. I know the band would love to have that opportunity again so I would happily oblige!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Hannah: I’ve not had many that I can remember, but there’s probably been some and I’ve forgotten…
John: I don’t know if this counts as a gift, but I was once playing drums at a gig (not with Winter Storm) and the guitarist accidentally kicked a cymbal stand straight into my face across the bridge of my nose. This caused me to have a horrifically heavy nosebleed. A very kind lady in the audience handed me a tampon from her clutch bag, and so I finished the gig with half a tampon up each nostril.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Hannah: Thank you for sticking with us, believing in us, and I told you this third album did exist hahaha!
John: Thank you for sticking with us, please buy our new album, and always support your local music scene.

If you could bring one Metal/Rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Hannah: So many… Phil Lynott, Pete Steele, Prince, Randy Rhoads…
John: Freddie Mercury; or possibly Giacomo Puccini if that’s allowed.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Hannah: I love being able to collaborate/create music with others, and release it. To have fantastic social circles of friends and musicians who all work together so well. I hate; constant admin and things of that nature. Late nights haha.
John: I most enjoy the catharsis of being able to play, create, and record music; to perform and collaborate with other people and the sense of community within it. I most hate about music travelling (I get very travel sick) and the expense of the equipment.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Hannah: I wish more of us went to local unsigned shows.
John: The bureaucracy and monetisation aspects of it. Whilst it would be great to be able to earn a genuine living from playing and making music, it’s often the sheer cost of certain aspects of it that make it hard to fully pursue as both a performer and a fan.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Hannah: There’s so many… Type O Negative – “October Rust”.
John: Nightwish – “Once”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Hannah: CD’s for me. Love cassettes too.
John: It varies depending on what I’m doing or the routine I have at the time. There’s no denying that digital is the best in terms of portability and availability, but I love nothing more than listening to old opera recordings and recitals on vinyl whilst quaffing pints of tea.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Hannah: Bloodstock Open Air, Wizzfest Belgium, HRH Metal.
John: HRH Metal festival with Winter Storm earlier this year.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Hannah: Teaching, as I do most days 🙂
John: I’m presently studying my Master’s degree in Forensic Science, so I would focus solely upon that and a career in criminal evidence, or specialising in bloodstain pattern analysis.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Hannah: Good grief! I have no idea haha. If we are talking living, maybe Jason Momoa, Tina Guo, Nita Strauss, Hans Zimmer, Stephen King.
John: Christopher Hitchens, Stephen Fry, Brian Blessed, Kenneth Williams, Vincent Price

What’s next for the band?

Hannah: To release “Relapse In Time”, play some great shows, including our launch show and promote the new record.
John: As mentioned earlier, we have our album “Relapse In Time” coming out in October, and we have a handful of gigs to promote that as well as several gigs and festival slots lined up throughout next year.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

John: The band has a very active Facebook profile and we announce all of our news and updates on there. At present, we’re releasing a teaser video of each of the album’s tracks once a week during the lead up to the release date. We’re on Week 6 now and all of the teasers and our music videos are available on our YouTube Channel.

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Hannah: biscake?!
John: They’re most definitely cakes. Biscuits turn soft when they go stale, whereas cakes turn hard. Jaffa Cakes turn hard; not that they have that opportunity if they’re within my arm’s reach!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for the interview!
Only to labour the point that our third album “Relapse in Time” will be released on 11th October, and thanks again for having me 🙂
