EMQ’s with BRASS OWL

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with US Heavy Rock Power Trio, Brass Owl. Huge thanks to guitarist/vocalist, Brian Tarter for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Brass Owl. We are a heavy rock trio. We formed a couple of years ago when I (guitarist, singer, songwriter) met a fantastic fusion style improv drummer, and started jamming and taking my song ideas and building something. We did an EP release in 2018, and shortly after I started planning and writing the next, soon to be released record. The 1st record is more jam style, but the new record is much more planned and calculated, and heavier in my opinion.

How did you come up with your band name?

From walking thru the antique mall. I saw one and bought it, and use it for a dobro slide. I now have a small collection!

What country are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We’re in the United States and the metal scene is sort of meh, not very interesting, although there are a few good bands around.

What is your latest release (Album, EP, Single, Video)

The latest release is the brand new 2020 album “State Of Mind”, which will be released in early April.

Who have been your greatest influences?

As a guitarist I was really into the shred guitar guys like Vai, Satriani, etc. As a songwriter and what I like to listen to would be C.O.C., Trouble, Rival Sons, Cream, Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, Pride and Glory.

What first got you into music?

My dad had a guitar that I started messing with, and I met a really good player through my parents’ church when I was young who turned me on to stuff like Stryper, Trouble, Malmsteen, etc. Also, the movie Crossroads was a major influence on me.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Rival Sons

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Coachella. Looks rad and fits our genre.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

This guy made us a banner one time and made all the letters different glitter colours. He was trying to be nice and was a big fan, and we didn’t know how to not offend him and keep a fan, but not use it. Ever. It was not good.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thank you for listening and inspiring us to do what we do. We do not take them for granted.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Ginger Baker

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love the natural high from playing to an amped up crowd. I hate that there is no money in music, and I have to work a day job to pay bills.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Being able to make a decent living playing music. The way the music is stolen and streamed leaves very little for the artist.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Led Zeppelin II

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl, then CD. Downloads are ok but the MP3 and Spotify sounds like crap in my opinion.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I was lucky enough to open for ZZ Top and Cheap Trick for their 50th anniversary tour in Cleveland a few months ago. That was cool.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Building hot rods, choppers. Travel, boating, riding motorcycles. I have way too many hobbies.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Billy Gibbons, Dwight Yoakam, Zakk Wylde, Clint Eastwood, Billy Bob Thornton

What’s next for the band?

Doing some promo shows for the new album and earning our reputation as a live act. Hopefully do a small tour and some festivals. Sharing our musical creations with those interested in such things.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Usually Instagram or Fakebook. Not a big fan but it is a required evil in today’s music scene.
www.facebook.com/brassowlmusic/
www.instagram.com/brassowlmusic/

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

They are the magical place between the two. Mind blown.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for your time and support of music people. Best of luck to all in their musical endeavours. Oh yeah, and SHRED TILL YOUR DEAD!!!!!
