EMQ’s with LEATHERJACKS

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with São Paulo, Brazil based Hard Rock/Heavy Metal project, Leatherjacks. Huge thanks to vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Mauro Cordeiro

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hello Rick and everyone at Ever Metal! I´m Mauro Cordeiro, Singer, Guitarist and Multi-Instrumentalist at Leatherjacks. I would like to say Leatherjacks is (or should be) a band, but up to now, I´ve been and am a one-man band-based project.

I started it all out in 2016, with the idea to revive the AOR, Modern Hard Rock and Metal bands and music from the 80’s, based on all my influences and representing my country: Brazil. Here I am, to say we´re not only about Samba and Bossa Nova! I´ll always FIGHT for Rock And Roll because it´s not only a music genre. It´s a Way Of Living.

How did you come up with your band name?

The band name came from a brown Leather Jacket I had… I loved and used that jacket so much, it ripped and got decomposed! TRUE STORY! So, it´s a kind of Nickname to Leather Jackets, so I gathered it all as Leatherjacks. It´s NOT about the insect/larva haha!

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

I live in São Paulo, and the Metal/Rock scene here is pretty weak in terms of Original/Authorial bands. Most of the groups here are playing in little venues, little events, and the worst part: Only Cover Bands! So, Rock´s not growing here, mainly because of this reason.

So, São Paulo is pretty tough to dream big about Rock, but I NEVER give up!

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

My latest is the new Album “Extremely Dangerous”, released on April 10th, 2020.

I hope you all enjoy this album! Lots of great 80’s Metal, Hard Rock and AOR, dedicated for you all! It´s fresh, it´s nostalgic and Modern. Search for it in ALL streaming platforms!

Who have been your greatest influences?

I always LOVED two bands: Iron Maiden and Bon Jovi. So, I have this kinda Poppish Hard Rock with that raw Metallish Iron Maiden energy. And since I was 6, I remember listening to an LP my mom had, a soundtrack collection, from American movies, and one of the songs was ‘Eye Of The Tiger’ by Survivor. It´s my favourite song up to this day in my life. Pure AOR.

Lately in my mature life and music influences, I still listen to the favourite ones: Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi, Survivor, Deep Purple, Asia, Toto, Journey, Foreigner, DIO, Judas Priest, Gotthard, and lots of modern ones, such as Halestorm, Battle Beast, Crazy Lixx, H.e.a.t, and so many others! Wow I really mean it… I listen to George Benson, Motown, Jazz, Funk, Soul, Pop, EVERYTHING! No frontiers, no barriers…

If the music is GOOD, well composed, and well done, I´M IN!

What first got you into music?

I always remember listening to an LP from Survivor, with “Eye Of The Tiger”. And that song ALWAYS moved my life, and always gave me chills! Then, when I was 8, I asked one of my uncles to teach me acoustic guitar and dome chords and exercises (He plays very well, as does my mom – She also plays Piano, etc) so I’ve always had contact with music.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I´d love to do something with Lzzy Hale from Halestorm, or Noora Louhimo, from Battle Beast (she´s my muse by the way haha!). Dave Grohl would also be extremely cool! And my main idols of course: Adrian Smith and Bruce Dickinson would be PERFECT too!

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

I´d love to play in Wacken! It´s simply AMAZING! I watch all the videos, and I feel like: WOW, I need to be playing there someday!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Hm… I still haven’t received any weird stuff…But…Who knows, someday?

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Let´s Rock Together! Let´s enjoy music together. You´re all invited Jackers!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Just ONE name: RONNIE JAMES DIO! I´d love to see him alive again, but with the appearance he had in his 40’s, back in the 1980’s… Would Love to be his guitarist and do backing vocals.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I think what I most love about being a musician is the return you get from fans, followers, friends, family and people who are really proud of you, and those ones who really believe in you… You know? I think it´s the most special sensation an artist can breathe and feel.

I think there´s nothing I hate in music. From the bottom of my heart… Up to now, there´s nothing I hate about music!

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I´d really Terminate these things: Raggaton, Brazilian Funk, Brazilian Sertanejo and Pop.

It really irritates me, and in my opinion, it´s a musical loss of time, a real Poison for mankind in terms of music. Brazilian shit like Anitta, Maiara and Maraisa, Gusttavo Lima, Michel Teló.

Or American shit such as Dualipa or Sean Paul… Ah, it´s awful! Waste of time haha!

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Iron Maiden – “Piece Of Mind”. I won this CD as a Birthday gift when I was 13, in 1999. I´m 34 and I still keep this album in my drawer. The booklet paper is Intact! I really LOVE this album.

I listen from start to end. Entirely. It´s a true Masterpiece.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl and Cassettes are forever beautiful. I love them. I have lots of CD’s in my drawer, as told in the previous quote.

But in my opinion, CDs are a failure. So fragile, so poor media, in terms of construction, materials…

Downloads are a cool thing, but it turns music into an ethereal experience!

I like that you can feel music with synesthesia, you know? Opening a Vinyl sleeve, the smells, the booklet, the pictures, listening to the music, reading the lyrics, singing along… It´s a thing! Much better than digital music (My humble opinion).

But the good part is: Digital Music spreads much more easily! For sure haha!

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I actually only played one gig with Leatherjacks, because my line-up wasn´t the right one.

I´m still searching for a correct line-up. But let´s wait until this pandemic stuff finishes.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I´m a graphic designer, illustrator, web designer and 3D | 2D Character Animator, besides that, I also work as a Mixing / Mastering engineer. So Audio-visual is my life, definitely haha!

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Hm… That´s a tough one, because I´m a glutton and selfish guy! I’d dinner all alone hahaha!

What’s next for the band?

I hope to hugely promote the new album, somehow doing online streams, at home, etc. Let´s see what fate is reserved for Leatherjacks! Only God knows! Only future knows!

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

I use Facebook and Instagram a lot, but people can also reach Leatherjacks via Linktree!

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Wow, never heard about them, but I Googled, and it seems to be DELICIOUS. Reminds me some French Macaroons? Dunno! In my opinion it´s a Cakeuit haha!

Whatever it is… Please, gimme 10!

PS: I dunno how I still can keep myself in shape and thin/slim bodied…!

It´s a True Miracle! haha!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
