EMQ’s with CHUGGER

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Gothenburg, Sweden based Groove Death Metal band Chugger. Huge thanks to guitarist Robin Lagerborg for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Robin Lagerborg and I play guitar in Chugger, I’m the guy with the mask. 😉

The history of this band in short is that Robert (Bjärmyr) founded the band way back, they had have some different members come and go. And about 4 years ago I joined the band together with Eric (Skjuttorp). We both played in a-other band that didn’t really go anywhere and the opportunity to join Chugger emerged. So, we did, and here we are today stronger and better than ever!

How did you come up with your band name?

It’s all about the Chugs, and the way they are played, it’s just Chugging so It became Chugger.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Sweden, originally from different parts of the country. But we all live in the Gothenburg area now. It’s pretty good I must say, a couple of different venues with both bigger and smaller acts. Let’s hope they’re all still here after this Coronavirus pandemic.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

In this moment, as I’m writing, we are about one week from releasing our new album “Of Man and Machine” and we have released two singles and videos from the album. ‘Turning Point’ thats a lyric video and ‘Beg,Burn,Fear’ that is a theatrical video.

Who have been your greatest influences?

For me personally, it’s from all different directions. But how I write and play it’s a lot of influences from Dimebag/Pantera, Lamb Of God, Machine head, Mastodon, Hatebreed etc. Heavy, groove and aggresive is how I like it.

What first got you into music?

My dad and my uncle, my dad played guitar and my uncle played drums. And there was always alot of music around the house when I was growing up. So that’s what got me in to music.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Oh, that is a hard question. I actually got to check one of my bucketlist. We have a song on the new album with Espen”Esse”Hansen from Swindler and Hatesphere. He’s awesome and one of my favourite metal vocalists. But other than that, I’d love to do something with Trevor from The Black Dahlia Murder, or just do a tour with them would be killer.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

We were fortunate enough to actually play Wacken in 2018, that’s something I’d love to do again. That’s almost like the holy grail of metal festivals. But I’d love to play Copenhell, Metal Day’s or Brutal Assault. Just because they are awesome festivals and I think the crowd would respond well to our music.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Hmmm, I haven’t had the pleasure of getting any weird gifts yet. But I really look forward to getting some weird gifts. But we got a weird request from a fan, to sign his pre-order album with our blood, haha!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thank you all for your support, stay safe and I hope to see you from a stage near you soon!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Without a doubt, Dimebag Darrell he was taken away from us all way to early.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

The music, playing guitar, the process of finding new riffs and melodies and putting them together to create a song. I actually don’t hate anything about it, it’s something you do because you love it and you love music and you love to share your music with others. It connects you to other’s in a great way… Well okay, I hate that i need a regular job to pay for my expenses, haha!

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Oh, man that is a great question, And I really don’t know where to begin. Maybe make it easier for bands like us to get out there with the bigger bands, to do tours and festivals.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Just ONE!? Well…Mastodon – “Crack The Skye”

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

As a user I love the quick and easy solutions, like Spotify. But as an artist wanting some return on our expenses for merch and recording albums. I like all the options above, as long as the fans and the listeners get what they want. I buy CD’s just to support the bands I like.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I have to say Wacken Open Air, it was humongous! But I really enjoyed playing Gefle Metal Festival as well. That is an awesome festival, smaller and more intimate than Wacken.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Don’t know…It’s hard to picture myself without music and playing music. Maybe be an artist in some other way, making paintings or something like that.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

No one… I hate people, haha! No but seriously, let’s stick to living people not dead ones.
Jamie Jasta – Hatebreed
Robb Flynn – Machine head
Brann Dailor – Mastodon
Brent Hinds – Mastodon
Trevor Strnad – The Black Dahlia Murder

What’s next for the band?

Release the Album first digitally, then waiting for this corona shit to pass, release the album physicaly and hopefully we’ll get out on a tour across Europe and the world.
