EMQ’s With EYES OF THE RAVEN
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with West Midlands, UK Beer Metal band Eyes Of The Raven. Huge thanks to them all for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
We are Eyes of the Raven and we play #beermetal. The band have been going for 10 years and in the past year or so we have played Bloodstock festival and HRH, which were both epic shows. We have also been upping our music video game, as well as striving to write some awesome tunes. Check out our YouTube channel for more info!
Dave – Vocals.
Ross – Guitar
Craig – Lead Bass
Phil – Happy Drummer
Luke – Guitar
How did you come up with your band name?
It was originally the name of one of the early songs, we liked it way too much, so we kept it.
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
The Black Country, and no this isn’t a racist slur, we have a flag and everything. It’s in the UK near Birmingham. Our local scene is thriving with such folk as Fatangel, SYD and HilsOvation (for promotion and PR). Scruffy Murphys, The Asylum, Mama Roux in Birmingham, KK’s Steel Mill and The Giffard in Wolverhampton venue wise. As for bands, there’s far too many to mention on the scene right now. All supporting each other to bring metal to people’s ears.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
A single called ‘Twice Around The Sun’ and the video was released on the 17th of April on Youtube. Go check it out!
Who have been your greatest influences?
Metallica, Pantera, Down, Trivium, Nirvana, Pantera, Down, Clutch, Orange Goblin, Mastodon and many, many more
What first got you into music?
Craig: My Dad was a big Queen and Thin Lizzy fan and as for metal it was when I was around 13ish with Nu-Metal
Ross: Music has always been a massive part of my life; both of my parents are into their respective music which is mainly Country and Western for my dad and Northern Soul from my mom.
Luke: My Dad also, he introduced me to the likes of AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Queen, Thunder and many more from the great eras of rock.
Dave: My Uncle and his love of 70’s rock and metal.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Orange Goblin or Clutch come to mind.
Dave: On one end of the spectrum, Killswitch Engage. The other, Ice Cube.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
One of our aims used to be to play Download, however after experiencing the AWESOMENESS that is Bloodstock our sights have moved to their main stage. It’s such a different atmosphere there and we really enjoyed it.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Craig: Not a gift per se but we’ve got a fan out there who has a tattoo of the band name
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Be kind, drink beer and listen to metal!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Craig: Dimebag Darrell but it wouldn’t be right without Vinnie.
Ross: Vinnie Paul (to go with Dimebag).
Luke: There are so many but Lemmy!
Dave: Jeff Hannemann.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Craig: Love playing live, and writing can be frustrating at times
Ross: I love jamming and playing live, I hate recording.
Luke: Playing and creating music I love but the business side not so much.
Dave: Gigging and meeting new people is up at the top of the list. The business side of things near the bottom. But they go hand in hand, so we have to get on with it!
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
At the moment we think the music industry is going the right way, no longer is it dominated by huge corporations, music is way more accessible now and the Indie band format is more popular now than ever.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Ross: Facedown – “Mindfield”
Luke: Korn – “Follow The Leader”. I used to listen to that so much when I was younger.
Dave: Entombed – “To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak The Truth”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Ross: Personally, I like Vinyl, however digital is easy
Luke: Downloads, I’m lazy haha.
Dave: Yeah, digital. It’s just easier. 😂
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Craig: Bloodstock 2019 on the Jager stage
Luke: Bloodstock was awesome, but I enjoyed HRH too.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Ross: I’d be bored
Craig: Sat at home playing video games
Luke: Some sort of engineer.
Dave: Liberating Hope County from a horde of religious redneck crazies. (I’m currently playing through Far Cry 5.)
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Ross: Queen Elizabeth II, Phil Anselmo, Stephen Fry, Ozzy Osbourne & Henry Cavill
Luke: An Englishman, Scotsman, Irishman, American and Russian. See if we can come up with a joke.
Dave: Geoff Tate, Tom Lambesis, Corey Taylor, Chuck Billy, Mikael Akerfeldt.
What’s next for the band?
We’ll continue writing new material for the next release, as well as rescheduling all the gigs that we unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?
Craig: Cake. It’s on the packet
Luke: Cake definitely, I’m sure they had to prove this to avoid luxury tax.
