EMQ’s with ESPIRAL
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Ceuta, North African based Rock/Metal band Espiral. Huge thanks to them for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Alberto Mateos Miranda: – Singer
Luis Zapater Orti: – I am a guitarist
Antonio Jurado García: – I am the drummer. Espiral started when my friend Pita (Rogelio) and I, after years without playing to consolidate our work, decided to start again. We located Luis Zapater and after several component transformations Espiral was formed.
José Luis Corrales Silva “pepe”: – I play the guitar, I entered shortly after the album “CICATRICES” in the summer of 2014. Before I was a friend of the group.
Rogelio Mateo Pitalua: – I am the bassist. Espiral was born in the summer of 2005 with the entry of what was our previous vocalist, Jorge. At that time, La Taberna de Moe became Espiral and after several line-up changes, we reached this moment in which the band will release their fourth album “Cuando Vuelve El Sol”.
How did you come up with your band name?
The band’s name was decided at the rehearsal room. Several proposals were considered and none with a special meaning. Just the premise of finding a short and direct name. Espiral emerged.
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We are from Ceuta, a Spanish city in North Africa. Here in our land there is a lot of movement of bands that practice different styles related to heavy metal and its variants. We have always had very good bands.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Our last release will be next June 1, in the form of a disc that contains an unpublished song, a version of Tharna, a former local band and of which Alberto was their vocalist, and eight songs from the previous discs, which were newly recorded and with some adaptations to the new musical orientation of the band. There will also be a video clip of the song that gives the album its title, which will be released in the first week of June.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Alberto: Beatles, Iron Maiden, Red Baron, Scorpions.
Luis: Deep Purple, What In, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Scorpions.
Jurado: Twisted Sister, Stryper, Metallica, Scorpions, Guns N’ Roses, Sober
Pepe: My biggest influences are Metallica, Extremoduro, Wasp, In Flames, Slipknot, Tool
Rogelio: Stryper, TNT, White Lion, Savatage, Crimson Glory, Whitesnake
What first got you into music?
Alberto: Listening to and meeting The Beatles
Luis: Listening to Deep Purple’s “Made In Japan”.
Jurado: Surely my Uncle. He played drums and when I was little boy, I would come to his house so he would give me a drumstick, then I would break the detergent cans for my mother imitating timpani, and with brushes like drumsticks
Pepe: I have always liked music from a young age with Bob Marley and shortly after with Aerosmith’s “Get A Grip”. When it came out, that was the moment when it became clear.
Rogelio: I was always attracted to music on the radio, from a very young age I felt a great attraction for it. The orientation towards hard rock came from my group of friends at school with whom I shared the first cassettes of Judas, Scorpions and Baron Rojo.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
It would be difficult to choose one, we are five musicians and three musical generations, but one that we could agree with would be Scorpions. A collaboration on any of its classic themes would be unforgettable.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
I would choose the Download Festival in the UK for being today one of the top five in hard rock and heavy metal festivals in the world. There all the best meets…even if we could not play, if I can be an assistant, I would not mind hahahaha!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Alberto: A music box.
Luis: I don’t remember.
Jurado: I have not received any especially strange, but one that I really loved, some personalized drumsticks.
Pepe: a skull bracelet, but I do not consider it to be strange, but one of the details that I liked the most.
Rogelio: I have never received, but I must highlight for the part that touches me, the gift of some personal guitar picks with the logo of the band and the flag of our city. It was really amazing.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
That they enjoy the music, of their favourite bands, but above all that they give themselves to the bands with less media impact, those without big record companies and push them, since the musical life of an underground band will be shorter, but much more intense.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Alberto: Freddie Mercury and Ronnie James Dio.
Luis: Ronnie James Dio or Freddy Mercury.
Jurado: Clearly Dio and Freddy Mercury!
Pepe: Surely Cliff Burton?
Rogelio: Without hesitation, for the magic that he transmits to me in his solo work and with Crimson Glory, to John Patrick McDonald, Midnight.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Alberto: I enjoy making songs. I hate envy.
Luis: I enjoy the rehearsals and the conversations with the band, as well as the live shows …I hate the time before the concert.
Jurado: Rehearsals and hanging out with my friends. I hate sound that lasts longer and pick up after each concert.
Pepe: Enjoying music with my brothers from Espiral and with the people who come to support us in the live shows, what I hate most is having to pick up the instruments after the live show
Rogelio: The direct ones, the rehearsals are very enriching. Especially beautiful is the compositional coexistence of the new creations of the band. In music that word should not exist and for my part it has been banished forever.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
It is a natural selection, and little can be done to avoid it. The big bands will continue to generate trends and accumulate followers, and those of us who move on a small scale will continue to climb the slope of anonymity.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Alberto: Tharna – “The Invasion”.
Luis: Deep Purple – “Made In Japan”.
Jurado: Scorpions – “Love At First Sting”
Pepe: Extremoduro – “Ágila” and Metallica – “Ride The Lightning”.
Rogelio: TNT – “Intuition”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Pepe: To me personally the charm that vinyl has…but I also usually consume CD’s.
Rogelio: For durability the CD, for the enjoyment of a great cover, Vinyl. The downloads are a necessary and useful tool for all bands.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
They are all special, but if we have to choose one, we choose the concert of the last Festival ‘Va por ti Agus’. There was chemistry, very good sound connection and very good attendance.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Luis: Sports hobbies. Soccer and Sports Shooting.
Pepe: Dedicate myself more to sports (Muay Thai) for example.
Rogelio: I would dedicate more time to sports and my academic training.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Alberto: My band and a good friend
Luis: My band and Eddie Van Halen
Jurado: My band
Pepe: My Espiral brothers.
Rogelio: If you want to talk about music, if you want to have a funny time, if you want to smile, don’t hesitate, I am clear: Espiral.
What’s next for the band?
We are currently preparing to send the pre-order packs to coincide with the album’s release date. We have also designed with a company to send a review of the band and the release that will be disseminated to a large number of specialized press. We also work in local radio stations, as well as all those that we have access to broadcast our album. As for the live shows, at the moment the concerts are blocked by the pandemic, but we continue working to be able to present our album at the end of the year and continue in 2021 taking “Cuando Vuelve El Sol” wherever we can.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Espiral can be found on Facebook, Instagram, Bandcamp and YouTube.
Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
No but thanks to Ever Metal for this opportunity.
