EMQ’s with HEIST 2-11

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Newcastle, UK based Metal band, HEIST 2-11. Huge thanks to drummer ‘Higs’ for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hi- I`m Higs and I play drums in HEIST 2-11.

Some of us were in another band together that split up and reformed a couple of times, then on the third attempt we decided we wanted to try a new direction both musically and visually and this is what we came up with.

How did you come up with your band name?

Well when we regrouped, we also decided that the new band should be just that- a new band, with a new name, but we wanted a name that wouldn`t make people have a preconceived idea of how we sounded as that could be detrimental to growing our fanbase.

When we were throwing ideas around, our manager – Big Toe – said why not use something with numbers like Heist 487 whereby the 487 was police code for grand theft auto and we liked that idea but thought the GTA code didn`t go with Heist that well so looked up the code for armed robbery and found it to be 2-11.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We`re from Newcastle in the north east of England (UK). It`s a great city with a thriving rock/metal community and loads of live music venues catering for small bands all the way up to top name international major artistes so there`s always live music happening somewhere in town – it rocks!!

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We currently have our debut EP available from which we have released the title single, ‘FIGHT’ as well as a second single, ‘I AM ALIVE’ and these were accompanied with lyric videos which are available on Youtube.

Fight:

I Am Alive:

We`re currently recording our debut album but the pandemic lockdown has temporarily put things on hold for the time being so we`re not entirely sure on a release date for it yet- we`ll let you all know though lol

Who have been your greatest influences?

Collectively as a band we try not to let anything/anyone influence our song-writing as we don`t want to start “sounding like” anyone but ourselves but just for listening pleasure the guys listen to a very wide variety of stuff from many different music genres- personally I`ve been a metalhead since I was a kid.

What first got you into music?

Well I can`t speak for the band on that one but for me, my first awareness of hearing music that interested me was when I heard Queen`s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ on the radio and I was like “what is this?”-  it really made me sit up and pay attention and then when it went heavy at the end I was like, WHAAAAATTTTT?????? I`d never heard anything like it before and I think it planted the seed in my head for the kind of music I would listen to for the rest of my life.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I think different people/bands working together would produce such a vast variety of results that working with ANYONE outside of our unit would be interesting.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Obviously being from the UK, we`d love to be on one of the big stages at Download festival or Bloodstock over here but we`d love to be a part of ANY major festival the world over – there are so many to choose from these days.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

We don`t get gifts- send us gifts!!! Lol

We will always take time out to be with fans at shows and chat and stuff and the first few times you get asked to sign something for them feels strange because we`re just 5 (ab)normal guys playing music – you wouldn`t go to your favourite local eatery and ask the chef to sign a menu you know? Lol but it`s flattering that the fans want that so who are we to say no?!!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

That we have nothing but absolutely overwhelming appreciation for all of you/them for supporting us in any way and that gratitude will never falter – without our fans we wouldn`t be able to do this!!

OH, and don`t forget to send gifts lol

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Again, I can`t speak for the band on this as I`m sure you`d get 5 different answers but personally, without doubt it would be Randy Rhoads- I love his playing on Ozzy`s albums and his solos were sublime- a great loss to the world of rock and music in general.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I think I can speak for 99.99% of all rock/metal musicians in saying that the thing we enjoy the most is being on-stage in front of a big crowd who are into your music and the worst is loading/unloading/setting up all the gear – that is until you`re successful enough to be able to afford roadies haha.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I think there are many issues with the music industry that people would like to change from both sides of the fence, be it as a musician or a fan but from a band point I think it would be nice if there were more record labels in existence, signing bands, releasing their music, and offering help and support to get them to the masses – thankfully there`s guys like yourself who are doing all they can to help promote bands like us so thank you for what you do.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Although there is a multitude of awesome albums out there, I can easily tell you my absolute favourite album of all time : – “Operation Mindcrime” by Queensrÿche

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

It`s different horses for different courses- I still have a huge vinyl/cd collection and a hard-drive full of downloads and vinyl is having a big resurgence over here in the last 5yrs but as far as sound quality I don`t think you can beat CD’s – unfortunately people these days want everything fast and easy and so downloads are the first option.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Well, we`re still a relatively new band on the scene – we`ve only been gigging this line-up for a year so we`ve yet to play a BIG gig but that in no way undermines the gigs that we HAVE played as we always have an awesome time being onstage and interacting with the crowd.

That said, the show we did with a band called “Sulpher” stands out as probably the best so far – prior to that gig they had recently played at Bloodstock festival here in the UK and been on tour in Europe so we knew we had to be on top form and the venue was packed – needless to say we raised our game and played a blinder, winning over the crowd and making many new fans, which is always nice.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I think I would`ve still been involved with the music scene one way or another, road crew, tour manager, that sort of thing – getting to go out on tour and see the world.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Ace Frehley, Ozzy, Tommy Lee, Chris De Garmo and Steve Harris- imagine the stories they’d tell and by the end of the night I`d have them all working on a project together lol

What’s next for the band?

As I mentioned earlier, we’re working on getting the album finished for a release later on in the year and then it`ll be a case of trying to get gigs/tours/festivals lined-up to get out there and play – we absolutely love playing live and hope things can get back to normal soon, and then of course, world domination lol.

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

The answer’s in the name – biscuits get soft when they go stale and cakes go hard – stale Jaffa cakes are hard therefore they are indeed cakes!!!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

We’d just like to say thank you again to everyone who supports us, and we hope to see you soon.

And don’t forget to send gifts!!! hahahahahahaha
