EMQ’s with SIN CIRCUS

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Blackpool, UK based Theatrical/Concept Metal/Rock band Sin Circus. Huge thanks to guitarist Luis Gutarra for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Luis Gutarra, guitarist for Sin Circus.

Sin Circus was formed in the spring of 2015 by vocalist Vicky Spencer and drummer Luke Fox.
After some member changes, the current line up consists of:
Vicky Spencer – Vocals
Luis Gutarra – Guitars
Jake Tyndall – Bass
Luke Fox – Drums

Together we brought to the table our personal influences such as Metallica, Iron Maiden, Tool, Scorpions, The Gathering, Disturbed, Karnivool, Evergrey, Black Sabbath, Delain, Korn, among many more. We didn’t intend to go down a specific route, we just let the flow take us. The result was a heavy, melodic sound with hard hitting riffs and catchy hooks.

Sin Circus released their debut EP “Bored” in June 2017 and has since played many shows in the North West of England, supporting bands such as Sinnergod, The Dead XIII, Ward XVI, Sometime The Wolf, and Swedish metallers We Are the Catalyst.

In February 2018 we entered the studio to start work on our first full length. The Album title is “VII” and was released as digital download and streaming on 7th July 2020.

How did you come up with your band name?

Luke and Vicky came up with the band name, they initially intended to have elaborate circus-like theatrics onstage whilst having the 7 deadly sins as the theme.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are based in Blackpool, which has a small but vibrant metal scene, very close and supportive of each other. Here we have many great bands who are also good friends of ours such as Daybreaker, Phantom Sea, Blacklist and Avarus.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our first full length ‘VII’ was released on 7th July 2020 for digital download and streaming, totally self-funded, partly through merch and CD sales. It was produced by James T Routh (Sonic Boom Six, Askari) and mastered by Federico Telesca. The album was recorded at Rock Hard Studios and Berlin Studios in Blackpool as well as at James’ home studio, also in Blackpool.

The eight tracks on this album represent a natural evolution of our sound and song writing, with a much richer and atmospheric sound, without compromising the heaviness.

The album title and songs refer to the seven deadly sins.

Around the time we were discussing potential names, I remember one day at home going through the demo for our song Seven, my girlfriend said, ‘Seven is a cool name for an album’, when I suggested the name everyone was onboard. We usually tend to be very vocal about our personal preferences but this time it was decided really quick. I love Seven, it’s a lucky number.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Personally, Kiss, Beatles, Black Sabbath and Metallica. My guitar heroes are many, Jimi Hendrix, Ace Frehley, Marty Friedman, Kirk Hammett, and John Norum are some of them.

What first got you into music?

If I go by my parents’ version of events, every time there was a musician performing on TV, I used to stand in front of the screen ‘singing’ whilst strumming a plastic toy guitar when I was 1 or 2 years old, though I didn’t start playing music until I was 17.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Personally, I would love to do a collab with In Flames.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Wacken Open Air, it’s quite self-evident haha. Also, I would love to play a show in my hometown, Zaragoza, Spain.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

None yet haha.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

We are most grateful to you for your continued support and we are really excited to share our new album with you.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Jimi Hendrix

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love the power of creation, to be able to move people’s hearts through music.

As for hate, hate is such strong word, I may dislike certain aspects of the business side of things though sometimes they are necessary evils. I always remind myself of what is important here, the love and passion for music.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I don’t think this is a question that can easily be answered. The business side of music has dramatically changed over the past 4 decades and nowadays it’s easy to find ourselves constantly playing catch. It’s an ever-evolving world.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” – The Beatles

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

It depends on each individual’s taste and convenience. I personally have embraced the digital world, though I respect every person’s personal choice.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

With Sin Circus my favourite show is perhaps Manchester 8th March 2020 at The Bread Shed, just before the lockdown. This show was very special in terms of crowd engagement and attendance, it certainly left a long-lasting smile on my face and I felt really touched by the love shown to us by the crowd, very heart warming.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I do art, so I would have probably pursued more actively that line of creativity. The album art piece is mine.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

I don’t enjoy writing guestlists haha. They would have to be people with whom I can have meaningful and enjoyable conversations.

What’s next for the band?

We plan to spend this year promoting the album. We are already writing material for the next album and we hope to be back onstage as often as we can as soon as venues re-open.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

People can find our music on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Youtube Music, and Deezer.
