EMQ’s with CHASING APPARITIONS

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Terre Haute, Indiana based Metal band Chasing Apparitions. Huge thanks to Josey Stines for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hello, my name is Josey Stines. I play guitar & do some vocals. Chasing Apparitions originally started out as my solo project, but as time went on, I realized I couldn’t do everything I wanted by myself. Long-story-short, I met Jacob Ortengren & we began writing some music together & our producer Jonathan Dolese recommended that Justin Stubbs do vocals & we all just clicked instantly.

How did you come up with your band name?

I want to say the band name is something I saw on Tumblr back in 2015. Something about reverse album titles or opposite song titles or something along those lines. I’ve since tried to find the post, but to no avail.

What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?

Chasing Apparitions is from the United States of America. The metal scene here, in my opinion, is lacking. There’s a ton of love for pop-punk & rock bands, but it’s becoming harder to find venues that will actually book bands that have screaming, at least in my state.

What is your latest release (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our last release was the single, ‘As Above, So Below’ off of our soon-to-be-released EP, “Am I Worth Saving?”. We do have a new single coming out on 8.7.2020 titled “L’appel Du Vide” so be on the lookout for that.

As Above, So Below (Lyric Video)

Who have been your greatest influences?

Musically our influences are Architects, Born of Osiris, Wage War, Fit for a King, Northlane, & Bad Omens.

What first got you into music?

Hearing “Stand Up & Scream” by Asking Alexandria is what got me into music. I just fell in love with the sound & the look & the stage presence. Watching their music videos made me realize that I wanted to do music for the rest of my life.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

If I could collaborate with anyone, I’d think I’d really like to work with the guys from Dayseeker or Thousand Below. I absolutely love what they’re doing within their genre & how they’re transforming rock music. I think it’d be fun to pursue a side project in that style.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

I would really love for Chasing Apparitions to have the chance to play Warped Tour. It’s not the biggest festival, but it has a special place in my heart because I use to go to it every single summer. It was always a goal of mine to play it at least once.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

The weirdest gift I’ve ever received would have to be a balloon. I just found it extremely odd for someone to just have a balloon in their back pocket to give away at a show. It wasn’t even blown up.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

I would have to tell the fans, thank you so much for sticking around throughout the hiatus. I know 3yrs is such a long time in the music scene, but I still had people message Chasing Apparitions all the time asking when we were going to drop new music. The wait will be worth it. I promise you.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

I would have to bring Jimi Hendrix back from the dead. I feel as though 4 years wasn’t enough for him.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I enjoy seeing people’s reaction when they hear our songs for the first time or when they comment on YouTube & tell us how they really connect with the message we’re trying to change.

I hate seeing fans belittling bands for changing things up album to album. The band will always be in a catch-22, if they write another heavy record people will say they wrote the same album twice, if they change it up, they changed too much. I just wish people were more accepting.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I would change how metal music is perceived through the community. I don’t like how any music with screaming always has some sort of stigma against it & they’re almost always limited right out the gate as far as playlists, radio play, & advertising, as well as any other medium you can think of.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

There Is a Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let’s Keep It a Secret.” by Bring Me The Horizon

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

The best for audio quality is Vinyl, hands down, but the best for me personally is streaming. I feel like streaming really opened up music.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

It was a show back in 2016 at The Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, IN. The place was packed. Kids were going nuts. There were moshpits & people running on stage. That show blew my mind. I love that venue.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

If I wasn’t a musician, I like to think I’d have a job as a graphic designer or something in audio/video. I really love After Effects & editing videos.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Blackbear, Deberg, Lil Aaron, Justin Stone, Katy Perry.

What’s next for the band?

Chasing Apparitions is releasing a new single titled, “L’appel Du Vide” on 8.7.2020, with the EP “Am I Worth Saving?” coming out shortly after. Make sure to stay up to date on our socials so you know when it drops.
