EMQ’s with BADGUYSWIN

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Grand Forks, BC based Grunge Revivalists, BADGUYSWIN. Huge thanks to vocalist/guitarist Shane Sherman for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Shane Sherman and I’m the vocalist and lead guitarist for BADGUYSWIN. We are a grunge rock band, inspired heavily from the grunge rock of the 90’s. The history of the band is a rather long one. We all grew up together and were brought together by our love of music. Before BADGUYSWIN, we were a progressive tech metal band called Slagduster. We decided we wanted to try something a bit new and different, so BADGUYSWIN was born.

How did you come up with your band name?

It’s a tongue in cheek joke about how bad guys often seem to come out on top. It was also inspired by a song by an artist we all enjoy.

What country are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from British Columbia, Canada. The Metal/Rock scene is pretty large, though largely concentrated within the larger cities. We have big metal and rock hubs that attract rock and metal bands from all over the globe, and the fans are very enthusiastic, supportive and loyal. I would say the scene in Canada is pretty strong and always growing.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single or Video)

We recently released our debut album, “Cowards.” Since COVID affected our tour plans, we instead released three music videos, named ‘Honey Bucket’, ‘Lying to Myself’ and ‘Needle Beach’.

Lying To Myself (Official Video)

Honey Bucket (Official Video)

Who have been your greatest influences?

Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Kyuss and Nirvana would be a few of the top ones.

What first got you into music?

My older brothers started showing me all the bands that they were currently listening to. They had a large library of music and exposed me to many genres and bands, both popular as well as lesser known at that time. From then on, I was hooked.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Queens of the Stone Age and Big Wreck, absolutely.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Are we allowed to time travel? If so, I’m Lollapalooza for almost any year.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I look forward to the day where I receive a weird gift. Sharing is caring. That’s also not a hint to give me weird gifts. Probably.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Pursue your passion. It doesn’t matter your skill level, your age, or anything else. You have one life and it’s important to seek out what makes you happy.

If you could bring one Metal/Rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Chris Cornell. He had a lot more, great music left in him. He had a lot to offer the world.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I enjoy being creative, and I love expressing myself through music. I love being a listener, and the sense of pride to be able to contribute to the community. What I dislike about being a musician is that people tend to be quick to judge and hate things so fast. If you don’t like it, don’t listen to it. There’s no need to criticize other people’s musical choices.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Artists should be compensated more for their work. Artists tend to be expected to work for exposure but unfortunately exposure alone doesn’t pay for the expenses that come along with creating music.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

That’s a tough one because I can think of 5 immediately. I think I’d have to say “Pleasure And The Greed” by Big Wreck. That was a tough one though.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I’ve been collecting CD’s for 20+ years and I won’t stop.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The Okanagan Tattoo and Brew fest! We were openers early in the day to an amazing line-up, which meant that we had plenty of time to sample great local beer while watching a phenomenal line-up. To top it off, we got our pick of fantastic local food trucks. It was an awesome day.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I would probably focus my energy onto cooking. I love to cook, so I would be spending more time trying new recipes. Beyond that, I would be making it a goal to be on Survivor.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Ian Thornley, Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Jeff Probst, Pat Peeve

What’s next for the band?

We are working on our next album and thinking up new ideas for shows and videos. We are hoping to tour once it is safe to do so, and we are increasing our online presence so we can better interact with fans.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

We announce all of our activities on Facebook. Our album is up for grabs on Bandcamp, but we are also available on almost every music sharing service. Amazon Music, YouTube Premium, Soundcloud, Spotify, etc. We are pretty much everywhere.

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

I don’t know what a Jaffa cake is, but I’m going to call it a pie.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

New album “Cowards” is out now. If you’re a fan of grunge or alternative of any kind, give us a listen and let us know what you think! Thank you for having us!
