EMQ’s with SCARS

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with São Paulo, Brazil based Thrash Metal band Scars. Huge thanks to drummer João Gobo for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is João Gobo and, I’m the drummer! Well, Scars is a Thrash Metal band based in São Paulo, Brazil. It came to light in the nineties, more specifically in 1991. Some years later, in 1994 we released a split album named “Ultimate Encore”. In 2005 was released an EP entitled “The Nether Hell”. That’s the first part of a trilogy inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. I joined the band in 2007 and, in 2008 we released our first full length album, “DevilGod Alliance”, continuing the Dante history and exploring the duality – good versus evil in English classic literature. Names like Edgar Allan Poe and Goethe were huge influences. After a hiatus of 10 years, with a renewed line up, mixing members of Nether Hell and DevilGod eras with completely new members the band returned with two new songs: ‘Armageddon’ and ‘Silent Force’. That is the final part of this Thrash Metal Literary Adventure. Turning the page, Scars begun a new chapter in its history with a new album entitled “Predatory”, released on August 7th.

How did you come up with your band name?

Régis (Singer/SCARS) came up with the name back in 1991. He took his inspiration from Dark Angel’s album “Leave Scars”.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are a Brazilian band! Originally, the group was based in Moóca neighbourhood, in São Paulo. Nowadays each one of us lives in a different part of the city. The Brazilian scene at all, not just specifically in São Paulo is very fruitful. We have a lot of really good bands making their own.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

As a said earlier, in early August, we released a new album entitle “Predatory”. And two new videos from the singles “Predatory” and “Sad Darkness Of The Soul”.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Personally, my greatest influence in drum music was Eric Carr, from Kiss. Basically, I’m a groove-oriented drummer, so I strongly prefer this kind of taste. Drummers that plays for the music, not over the music attracts me very much. Names like Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, Neil Peart, Vinnie and Carmine Appice, Gene Hoglan, Cozy Powell, Dave Lombardo and many others are huge inspirations.

What first got you into music?

Back in the eighties, I was a little kid in front the TV watching the first Kiss show in Brazil. That’s what changed my life forever. A new headbanger was born! Since then I began to crush everything hittable. Many years later, here I am!

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I really would like to collaborate with a number of names. It’s so difficult to pick just one…

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Obviously Wacken! The reason is very simple: The greatest metal festival in the world.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I really don’t remember.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Play it loud!!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

My first and major influence. The one and only Eric Carr!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love to play, to be on stage, to talk about music at all and especially, make music! For me it’s the greatest form of art. But I really hate ego battles and sometimes the music industry can be translated as the ego industry or selfish industry.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Can we reset all and restart it from the beginning?

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

That’s a difficult one! There are a lot of great records in my personal collection. In this time, I prefer to pay tribute to one of the most violent records in Brazilian metal history: Sarcófago’s “I.N.R.I.”

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I was born in seventies. I grew up with vinyl, so it’s a natural choice.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Talking like a professional drummer, and taking all my career, I have to say that, for me, the most special gig that I have played, was in Hannover (Germany). That was my first international experience. I was the drummer of a Black Metal band called Arum.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Luckily, I’m a lawyer too! That would be my way, in any case.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

I would prefer to be invited for a dinner party! Much more fun!!!

What’s next for the band?

Despite this pandemic situation, the band remains working. In a few days we will restart the rehearsals for some live concerts on the internet. We are working together for the promotion of this new album. We hope to be back to the live gigs and tours, as soon as possible.
