EMQ’s with KAMALA

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Campinas, Brazil based Thrash Metal band, Kamala. Huge thanks to vocalist/guitarist Raphael Olmos for taking part!

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

I’m Raphael Olmos, founder of KAMALA and the vocalist and guitarist. I made the band in 2003, mixing the energy of metal and oriental melodies. We have already released five studio albums, 1 live album and 1 EP.

How did you come up with your band name?

It came from a Hindu goddess. I wanted an easy name to remember with good meaning.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Brazil, and we live near of São Paulo. The Brazilian metal scene has a lot of cool bands and headbangers, but the country is toooo big, and it is difficult to make national tours for example. I wish that the public, after this pandemic, have the “thirst” to watch the gigs again.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our last album is the first live album that we released called “LIVE IN FRANCE”. It was recorded in the last gig of our 6th European tour. And the coolest thing was that we didn’t know that the show was being multi track recorded, so is a totally organic live album. We listened to the tracks and sent to our producer just to make the mix/master. The gig happened in October and we released it less than 2 months after. It was a good surprise to us, for the fans and media. Many journalists in Brazil voted it as best live album of 2019.

‘Stay With Me’ (Live In France)

Who have been your greatest influences?

My personal main influences for sure are Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura, Slipknot and Gojira

What first got you into music?

After watching a double VHS from Metallica “…a year and a half”, I discovered that I wanted to become a professional musician. The tours and Black album making of, was a good “shock” to me…I was 13 years old, I guess, when I watched.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Many bands and musicians, but to make something official someday with Ola Englund, Lady Gaga, Corey Taylor, Mike Portnoy, Eloy Casagrande or James Hetfield…wowwwww I have no words to describe it.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Hellfest…because in my opinion, it is the biggest metal festival actually. And the French headbangers are AWESOME!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I’ve never received any weird gift, just cool gifts until now!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

We are in a difficult time, stay strong and healthy. Take care of you and your family/friends. Next year we will release our new album and we hope that we see you on the road!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Just one…ohhhhhhhh, for sure Dimebag. But give one more please, and I could bring Cliff Burton too!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Every day is a new day. New people to reach, new places to visit, new music to write and connect with the people…music is art, and when someone says that our art helped in some way, this is powerful!

The bad thing, that here in Brazil, musicians are not respected as they should be, in my opinion.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Difficult, but I always wish more support for the musicians in general

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“… And Justice For All” (Metallica)
“The Great Southern Trendkill” (Pantera)
“Iowa” (Slipknot)
“Scenes From A Memory” (Dream Theater)
“From Mars To Sirius” (Gojira)

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

All of them, the best one is that you can have contact with music. But Vinyl has a beautiful bass frequency and the artwork looks amazing!

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I have had amazing gigs…but if I need to choose the most special. It was at Metal Cultures 2016, in France. The festival happens in Guéret, inside a church, the vibe that came from the public and the crew that day, was amazing. And I had the pleasure to share the stage with some bands that I was big fan of when I was 18 years old.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Really, I don’t know…all my life is turned around the music! Write new riffs, that came to my head any time of my day, and work on this, release a new song, a new album, play this song to people and have their connection…it’s something magical!

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Imagine this…James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich, Rob Trujillo and Jason Newsted, and we will have a beautiful METALLICA night! The band that changed my life and still my favourite all time band. How cool would that be?!

What’s next for the band?

We are still waiting to release our WICKER MAN cover for an Iron Maiden Brazilian tribute…we truly hope to release it ASAP.

After this, work with the new line up. Our next album is ready, and we are searching for a good international label to sign and release it and make the next European tour that was postponed because of the COVID 19 situation, and moved to September/21. Make a lot of videos and many gigs as possible to promote the new album and make KAMALA a bigger name day by day.
