EMQ’s with RED COUNTY JAIL
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Karweiler, Germany based Rock band, Red County Jail. Huge thanks to Lukas and Steve for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
We are Lukas (Bass) and Steve (Vocals) from Red County Jail. The band has been around since 2015 and we have been playing together in this constellation since 2018. After being on tour for a while we started recording new material that has been tested on the road. Our first EP “Fuzzy Sally” came out in February this year and was re-released with our new label Bug Valley Records in October.
How did you come up with your band name?
It’s the name of a Prison in a famous video game, that some of the band members like to play. That’s not very poetic but we thought it would fit the music. 😉
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We are based in South West Germany. There is a solid underground metal and rock scene here. All the bandmembers have been a part of this scene for a long time now and we knew each other before we started the band.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
On November 20th we released our new single ‘Never Look Back’.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Lukas: For me it’s definitely old Hard Rock bands like AC/DC and the Rolling Stones. But there are also Bands like Shinedown or Palaye Royale that belong to a younger era of Rock Music.
Steve: I love bands from the 90’s like Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. Nowadays I listen to Biffy Clyro and Thrice. It’s the singer not the song. 😉
What first got you into music?
Steve: My god rides a skateboard. So, my friends asked me to join their band during a skate session.
Lukas: For me it was my first band with our guitarist Sebastian that got me into the bass. I’m still thankful that he asked me to join though. 😊
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
One day we would love to hear what Rick Rubin has to say about our records. 😉
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
A dream of ours is to play at Download Festival. And Wacken of course.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Someone made a cake that looked like the cover of our EP. That was nice!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
If there is something that bothers you, leave it behind you. Never Look Back.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Lukas: Of course, Bon Scott.
Steve: Jeff Buckley because he was just awesome.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
We love playing live and we are so disappointed that it’s not possible right now. Through live shows, and our music, we are able to express things that can’t be expressed through anything else.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Steve: I think there needs to be a change in how we handle music today. The good thing about the digital era is that everybody has the ability to record their own music. Therefore, we need to find a system to sort out the music that is right for us. Especially for me it’s hard to find new and inspiring bands.
Lukas: I would like people to listen to full albums again.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Lukas: Last one that came out was “Attention Attention” by Shinedown.
Steve: Mine would be Dead Kennedys – “Bed Time For Democracy”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
For us it’s the mixture of Downloads and Vinyl.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
We played the Reload Festival in Germany and shared the stage with In Flames and Kreator. That was a huge one and we are still thinking back to it! Other than that, we played a co-headliner slot in our region and many of our fans got the possibility to see us. That was huge on another level.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Steve: I think I would be managing things in some kind. Maybe for a company or something.
Lukas: My first plan was to become a teacher, so I guess that would be the way to go.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Lukas: My Guest list would include Brian Johnson, the Young brothers Angus and Malcolm, Cliff Williams and Phil Rudd. So basically, it would be AC/DC. 😊
Steve: I would like to meet Barack Obama and Mikhail Gorbachev. And I would invite Rick Rubin, Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney.
What’s next for the band?
Next is our upcoming single release. We are also recording songs for our first long player which will hopefully be out in 2021. And maybe we will be able to play some shows again, that would be awesome.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?
Lukas: Since they are made in my hometown, I would say biscuit. Steve thinks they are just shit. 😊
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks, Ever Metal for having us. Keep up the good work and thank you for keeping Rock’n’Roll music alive. In times like these it’s important to look at the good things that happen and music is just one of them!
