Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Star Cluster M13 based Drone Metal band Lords Of The Drift. Huge thanks to David Bason for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

David Bason. I play in Lords of The Drift. We are an experimental/drone band. Our record “The Arecibo Message” is the sound of space. You can hear it wherever you like to listen to music as from 20/11/2020. We’re just a bunch of friends who share a love of the classic record “Earth 2”. We got together and made a record. Arjan made a killer full-length video for the record, he also mixed and mastered the record, he’s got skills.

How did you come up with your band name?

Tomo had it kicking around. It was better than the one I suggested. What do you think, is Lords of the Drift better than Engorged? I think so.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from star cluster M13. There are plenty of rocks floating around and tons of space junk, heavy metal will kill you in space, it travels at 18,000 miles an hour.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

“The Arecibo Message”, which was released on 20th November 2020.

The Arecibo Message is a 1974 interstellar radio message carrying basic information about humanity and Earth sent to globular star cluster M13.

“The Arecibo Message” (Full Album Video ‘This Is What Space Sounds Like’)

Who have been your greatest influences?

Earth, Brian Eno, Mastodon, Hawkwind.

What first got you into music?

Iron Maiden. We focussed in on Earth’s radio airwaves but since audio takes a long time to get to us, we’ve only just discovered them. It is the height of what you humans have achieved to date.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Tomo Milicevic (Google him). Timothy Showalter (Stand of Oaks) and Arjan Miranda (S.T.R.E.E.T.S and Black Mountain). I want to make an underwater record.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Roadburn Festival in Netherlands

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Every gift is awesome and nothing is weird. I once gave a band my wisdom teeth in return for the wisdom their records gave me. They didn’t think that was weird, they put them on the dashboard of their van. BTW that band rules, Problem Children from Hamilton, Ontario Canada.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Bleep bleep bloop, bleep. See you in space very soon.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Mr. Chi Pig

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Making music with my friends. It’s my favourite thing ever! I hate that I’m not better at it!!!

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Office hours? I’m a morning guy.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Earth 2”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I got to open for H.R. from Bad Brains once. That was cool.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Trying to make the perfect cup of ambition.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Tomo Milicevic, Timothy Showalter, Arjan Miranda, Salvador Dali, Steve Ignorant.

What’s next for the band?

Just supporting the new full-length and making the next one immediately.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Fucking biscuit.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Get stoked.
