EMQ’s with ROVAR

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Münster, Germany based Heavy Rock Trio Rovar. Huge thanks to Luca, Paul & Bennet for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

I´m Luca! I play guitar and I am also the singer.

My name is Paul. I am the bassist.

Hi, I’m Bennet and play drums!

We are a heavy rock trio called ROVAR. Luca and Paul were playing together in the blues rock band “Square Heads” before, but were looking for a new drummer since their former drummer had left the band. Luca knew Bennet from some past projects and asked him to come around for a jam session with Paul. We discovered there’s a great chemistry between us – musically as well as personally – so Bennet decided to join and a new trio was born. First, we continued to play gigs under the name “Square Heads” but, when we started writing new songs together, we soon realised that we were headed in a quite different direction than before. Also because of Bennet’s new influence, our new stuff turned out to be much more energetic and our blues roots became less apparent. So, we decided to make a fresh start. Our self-titled EP released in July 2019 marks the starting point for ROVAR.

How did you come up with your band name?

It was a sign plate that Luca stumbled upon on a trip in the Czech Republic. After searching for a band name for almost half a year Luca texted us a picture of it and it said “ROVA”. We agreed to just put an extra “R” behind it and it was decided at that very moment.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Münster, where we have a small but nice rock scene with a few live venues. We love to play live shows at clubs like Rare Guitar and Sputnik Café and get up close with our audience.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our new single ‘THIRST’ was released on November 27th!

‘Thirst’ (Official Video)

Who have been your greatest influences?

Luca and Paul are heavily influenced by 70’s and 90’s rock, whereas Bennet brought in some new emo and alternative influences.

What first got you into music?

Luca: My grandfather gave me a harp when I was a little kid and we played some melodies together.

Paul: My dad used to play cassettes of Deep Purple and would drum on the table with his hands to it. He also recorded a lot of 90’s Music videos on VHS.

Bennet: Also, my dad, who played guitar in a rock cover band when I was little. Their rehearsal space was above our garage and I would go over there and jam out on the drums every day.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

All Them Witches.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Hellfest or Krach am Bach Festival.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

A pack of permanent markers.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Don’t stop masturbating.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

That’s an easy one, Hendrix.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

We love the sweaty and noisy interaction with the crowd and to just cut loose on stage. Having a good time with other musicians, seeing different places, meeting new people. We hate when we can’t play live.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

We think if the power was spread more equally among a greater number of diverse labels (instead of having a few major players controlling the majority of the business), it would allow more experimental and daring music from underground scenes to surface and attract greater attention. The actual music that a band or artist creates should have more of an influence on their success than their budget for promotional activities.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Paul: Deep Purple – “Stormbringer”.

Bennet: Brand New – “The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me”.

Luca: Guns n’ Roses – “Appetite For Destruction”

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl for sure.

Paul: Yoga Instructor

Luca: Brain Scientist
