EMQ’s with THEREIN
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Brisbane Australia based Progressive Metal band, Therein. Huge thanks to vocalist/guitarist, Cameron, and drummer/vocalist, Ned, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Cameron: Guitar, Vocals, random shit!
Ned: Drums, Vocals
Cameron: I moved to Brisbane with a bunch of songs looking to get a band together. Through a mutual friend, I found out Ned was moving to Brisbane, and would probably be keen. We met up, found some more people, and now we’re still making noise.
How did you come up with your band name?
Cameron: It was just a name that I liked, and used to use as a name for demos and shit, when I was writing stuff growing up. It kinda stuck, and now I realize that it’s actually a pretty fitting name, given that a big part of the bands “thing” seems to be about expressing ourselves as musicians. Or something like that.
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
Cameron: We’re from ‘Straya. It’s probably not as “bustling” an environment as other parts of the world, but it has a history of some top-quality bands, so there’s obviously something good going on here.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Our second album ARAMITAMA! There’s also a video for the song ‘Through The Threshold’.
‘Through The Threshold’ (Lyric Video)
Who have been your greatest influences?
Ned: Frank Zappa, Dream Theater, Death
Cameron: Frank Zappa, System of a Down, Meshuggah… and just about every single piece of music that I’ve ever enjoyed.
What first got you into music?
Cameron: Always been around it, so I guess I wanted to make it, too!
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Cameron: There’s a few local bands here and abroad that I’d love to collaborate with. But I’d love to do something with Tomas Haake, Marco Minneman, or Guthrie Govan. Maybe I’d actually learn a thing or two.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Cameron: Wacken, because it’s sick! And I have friends in Germany that would get a kick out of it!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Ned: Spit in the face
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Ned: Please don’t spit in my face!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Ned: Frank Zappa
Cameron: Frank Zappa
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Ned: I enjoy not giving a shit about doing what I want, when I want to, for no reason. I hate the lack of $$$$$!!
Cameron: I love exploring sounds, writing and performing music, jamming…I probably hate how much the money seems to flow away from the musician. Makes it harder to sustain.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Cameron: Less “who you know” stuff, there’s far too many middlemen.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Ned: “Joe’s Garage” – Frank Zappa
Cameron: I can’t choose.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Ned: CD/Full/Higher Quality Digital Download
Cameron: CD, Vinyl, and Downloads.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Cameron: Most of the gigs we did in Japan.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Ned: Lifting Weights, Raising Children
Cameron: Wondering why the fuck I’m not a musician.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Cameron: Gordon Ramsay, and the rest of the Therein crew!
What’s next for the band?
Gigs, Merch, album number 3!
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?
Ned: WTF is a Jaffa Cake
Cameron: They’re biscuit-sized cakes. If they were cake-sized biscuits they would be called Jaffa Biscuits, and they’d be too much. Just thinking about trying to eat a cake-sized biscuit is making me thirsty!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
