Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Wisconsin, US based Heavy Metal band, Tantivy. Huge thanks to vocalist/guitarist, Adam, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Adam and I play guitar and sing in Tantivy and we play heavy metal. Jon and I have played in a bunch of bands in our area over the years but only just recently started hanging out. In fall 2019 we were rippin’ some dirt jumps up in Marquette, MI when this epic buck came out on the trail and told us to start a band. By February 2020 we had our first tunes taking shape.

How did you come up with your band name?

I had used the word as a lyric in a song I wrote a couple years back for my band Wardehns and always thought it would make a great name for an old school metal band. When we started writing we had a few names in mind but none of them sounded right for us, then one day I remembered the Tantivy idea and realized it was a perfect name for a band formed while ripping trail and within a few jam sessions it stuck.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

Wisconsin, before Covid the scene was pretty great. Lots of dedicated people in the smaller towns organizing DIY festivals and shows all the time. Kenosha, Madison, Milwaukee and Appleton are great places to play for any genre and have supportive scenes.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We have released the tracks ‘Cut ‘Em Loose’ and, ‘I Am The Wolf’ and the debut EP will be out on January 15th

Who have been your greatest influences?

Dio, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy, Agent Orange, Paul Di’Anno, Inepsy, Tragedy, At The Gates plus D-beat and early thrash/punk.

What first got you into music?

Just hearing heavy metal on the radio as a little kid got me hooked, also skateboarding opened lots of musical doors for me.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Hmm, that’s a tough one, maybe Michael McDonald.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Sing, dance, be nice and have fun every day. Buy our EP…

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Cliff Burton.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love playing shows, giving myself whiplash, living on the road, seeing new places, making new friends, riffing with buds, trading merch and hearing new bands. The things I hate about it are, keeping up with social media, booking shows in a pinch when one drops, oil changes, getting sick while on tour and loading during winter.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

High on Fire – “Blessed Black Wings”

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

All of the above.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

The free time Jon and I don’t use for the band we use for building jump trails, riding bikes, motorcycles, snowmobiles, skateboards and snowboards.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Hank Hill, Dale Gribble, Bill Dauterive, Boomhauer, Daniel Day-Lewis

What’s next for the band?

Currently writing more songs to hopefully release by mid-2021. Shows; Shows; Shows as soon as Covid goes away.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Biscuit sized cake.
