EMQ’s with COLDBOUND
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Swedish based, Melodic Death/Doom Metal band, Coldbound. Huge thanks to multi-instrumentalist, composer & producer, Pauli Souka, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Pauli and I am a composer/producer in Coldbound.
How did you come up with your band name?
It sounded cool at the time so why not? 🙂
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
Coldbound was established in Vantaa, Finland but I am living in Hudiksvall , Sweden. The scene here is small as we are still a countryside. There are some metal bands and it is notable to say that Vildhjarta comes from here. Hudiksvall has a great amount of very skilled virtuosos and there is always some cool music coming out from around these places.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
We released “The Gale” in 2018 but now we have a single ‘Slumber Of Decay’ coming out on 5th of February and a full album coming later this year. 😊
My Solace (Official Video) – Taken from “The Gale”
‘Slumber Of Decay (Official Trailer) – Due 5th February 2021
Who have been your greatest influences?
They are way too many to mention. The main influences however have been my best friends. Niko Salmi from Solitaire is someone to blame big time for the progress of Coldbound’s sound (he participates as well on the upcoming album ) and of course my beloved partners in cryme, Liv Kristine and Meiju Enho, who both are super experienced and it feels so intimate to do music with them.
Other influences could be early Genesis, Wishbone Ash, Kansas, Kingston Wall, Pink Floyd, Piirpauke, Yes, Aphrodite’s Child, Ayreon (or better to say, Arjen Lucassen) and many many others who were involved in shaping my musical universe.
What first got you into music?
The energy that is unleashing. Is truly magical.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
It is safe to say that in this aspect I feel fulfilled, as some of my favourite musicians are already part of this upcoming full-length album. 😊
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Any would do. Good music and nice people in beautiful places can’t go wrong.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Certainly, this would be pictures of a guy getting tattooed with an early Coldbound logo. Johan you are crazy. 😊
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Stay true to yourselves and don’t forget to listen to your beloved people. ♥️
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Petri Walli! RIP.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love the production process. What I hate is the processing and mixing.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Less people who are entitled to have a crucial voice but at the same time they don’t know what they are talking about. Media has a big role into all this and unfortunately, upon reading critiques or reviews sometimes I feel like I am correcting an essay that a 7-year-old kid has submitted.
It is important to express our opinion, no doubt, but some people just make a fool out of themselves while submitting a critique. For the bands, this has no impact nevertheless, as anything that is published, positive or negative, is automatically an exposure and exposures are good.
It would be the ideal to put more energy and attention into new music and new artistic endeavours instead of opinions, politics & hate speech that divides us all.
We have to face it, right now music is facing a crisis with all the latest events.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
They are too many to mention and one won’t grant justification. However, I would pick the debut of Kansas. 😊
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Analogue sound will forever overpower digital. So, vinyl it is!
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Heavy Metal Heart festival 2017 Helsinki, Finland, at Virgin Oil Co.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Well, I have a main source of income, out of decision, as I don’t want to be fully depended on music. It is not fun if music can’t pay rent and bills. 😊
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
It would be more than 5… 😊
What’s next for the band?
We are going to release a single the 5th of February and an album later on. Probably more singles will follow after this one. 😊
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?
Biscuits or cookies is what they are!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thank you for your opportunity. 😊
