EMQ’s with KILL FRENZY
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Cape Town, South Africa based Thrash Metal band, Kill Frenzy. Huge thanks to lead vocalist, Carl Retief, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Carl here, I am the lead vocalist for Kill Frenzy. Kill Frenzy was a band that started out of a necessity for heavier, faster and more politically incorrect music.
How did you come up with your band name?
One of the many things that bond the band is their love of the GTA game franchise. So, the ones old enough may remember the kill frenzy tokens that you used to be able to collect and go on a rampage…so it seemed a pretty good fit.
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We are all from different suburbs in the Western Cape, in South Africa. The scene is ever evolving and has a wide selection of different genres and bands.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Our latest single is called ‘Blood For Blood’ and will be followed up with a PSA music video.
‘Blood For Blood’ (Video)
(Rick Here – If you would like to watch the original video of ‘Blood For Blood’, which deals with the South Africa Farm Murders and was banned by YouTube, then please follow this link. WARNING, it is graphic)
Who have been your greatest influences?
I think it would be difficult to say because every band member has his own taste in metal, yet there are many bands that bind us together. I also think influences change and stuff that inspire me today is different from a year back.
What first got you into music?
I would have to say that way it made me feel. Through sound you can feel immense joy, pain, anger or ecstasy. Not a lot of other things in this world are capable of that.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Might seem odd, but Dave Grohl, hands down.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Download fest has always just been one of those fests that looks like a blast to play.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Something that might be a bit to PG for this interview.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Thank you, honestly, we just love having a jam and making music and it means a great deal to us if people enjoy it or relate to it.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Expressing myself and documenting moments and feelings in my life, and boy do I hate carrying heavy equipment after a night of partying.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I’d make it so talented people become famous for making their music again, and not the image driven music industry of today.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Mesmerize”, from System Of A Down comes to mind.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Toughest question yet, uhmmm I love them all, except you don’t see many cassette players lately.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
I think it would have to be Rock the Nation in Botswana.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I might have gone into politics, because I think at this stage anyone could be better at it then our government.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Rick Ruben, Dr Dre, Will Farrell, Ozzy Osbourne and Megan Fox.
What’s next for the band?
We hope to be blessed enough to keep making music we love, and play to people who like what we do.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
We are on Facebook, Instagram, haven’t really taken up tik toking just yet, and you can find our music on any of the major platforms like iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and YouTube Music.
Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?
I will have to try some and get back to you on that one.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
To all the international followers go and google farm murders, help spread some awareness.
