EMQ’s with BEYOND YOUR DESIGN
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with East Midlands, UK based Melodic Death Metal band, Beyond Your Design. Huge thanks to guitarist, Harry, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
I’m Harry, I play guitar and attempt to do some backing vocals in Beyond Your Design! We formed in 2016, initially just as a uni project, as us original members were all in the same class, but we enjoyed it so much that we decided to carry it on outside of uni. A few years, a few line-up changes and one name change later, here we are!
How did you come up with your band name?
When we first formed, we were originally called By Design. At the time I was watching the TV show Hannibal, great show by the way! The main character has this recuring monologue that he always ends with the phrase “This is my design”. We used that name for a few years but when we signed with our record label, Dreamscope Media Group, they told us that there were actually 16 other artists with that name! It took us a few weeks to come up with the new name Beyond Your Design. It’s like an evolution on what we were before.
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We’re from the East Midlands, UK. The scene around here does go under the radar a bit, which is surprising cos we’ve got big cities like Leicester, Sheffield, Nottingham and our hometown of Derby. I do think more bands should be looking to stop by here on their tours cos the show are always great!
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Our new release, ‘Gods And Men’, is the lead single for our upcoming debut EP, “Together We Rise” which’ll be out 4th March. This single is available on all platforms and the music video is up on the Beheading The Traitor YouTube channel. Trust me what I say that this video is absolute fire!

Who have been your greatest influences?
At this point we’re basically just ripping off Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine! They’re the obvious two, but there’s others such as Machine Head, Amon Amarth, As I Lay Dying and, surprisingly to a lot of people, a bit of Mallory Knox, I used to love them!
What first got you into music?
I can’t speak for the others, but for me it would be my Dad. He used to play guitar and I remember being mesmerised by it as a kid. Then listening to his favourite music in the car, Tom Petty, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, I had to get in on the action!
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
I think Rob would crucify me if I didn’t say Matt Heafy! But seriously, he is an extraordinarily talented, beautiful, hard-working, god-like man… Please call us, Matt!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Bloodstock Open Air. Easy choice.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Not so much a gift, but it certainly feels like one…before lockdown there was one guy that came to nearly all our gigs, we call him The Knighthawk. At every show, he insisted on doing a one-man circle pit! He’d just start running laps around the room, and he wouldn’t care if people joined him or not, he just kept running!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
I think at this time the only thing we can say is to keep safe and stay strong. This winter lockdown is definitely much harder than before, it’s cold and miserable and we can’t see our friends and family. But we all have to keep our heads up and think positively, the vaccine is rolling out now so it won’t be long until we can get out and hug our loved ones, grab a beer and go to a gig! But for now, just keep safe and stay strong, we’re with you all the way.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
We’ve lost a lot of good people far too soon recently! I don’t think picking one is fair on all the others! But I hear Lemmy had some good stories…I went to his old local pub not long after he passed as it’s not far from my parents’ house. It was like he was still sat at his favourite stool there the way people spoke about him.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Wait, people enjoy being a musician…? I thought it was just a constant cycle of feeling inferior to every other musician you see and buying expensive equipment!
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
This whole notion of gatekeeping or ‘superiority’. Like, what’s the point? Let people listen to, play, enjoy whatever they want!
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
You’re really gonna make me choose…? If I absolutely HAD to pick one, I’d say “The Silver Scream” from Ice Nine Kills. It’s got the perfect blend of fast riffs, catchy hooks and brutal breakdowns!
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Everyone’s gonna like their own thing, personally I prefer the convenience of downloading music onto my phone and having my entire music library in my pocket and being able to choose what I want with no fuss! And I know some people are going to slate me for saying that, and to them I say see my previous answer about gatekeeping and superiority, that still applies here.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Ooh, it’s a toss up between going up to Edinburgh last March or one of our Leicester shows the year before… Leicester was as part of Metal 2 The Masses, so the people there got to see us a few times, but we got that same reaction from our very first time playing in Scotland so for that reason I’d have to choose Edinburgh.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Well at the moment just sitting around do nothing all day! But out of lockdown my fulltime job is as a manger in a bar, which I do enjoy so I’d just stick with that.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
The only way I can answer this currently would be with my mum, dad, brother, sister and grandad!
