EMQ’s with HELGRIND
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Havana, Cuba based Pagan Metal band, Helgrind. Huge thanks to guitarist, Jordy Fuentes, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
I’m Jordy Fuentes guitarist in Helgrind. The band started in 2012. At the begining we were only Daniel Lameiro the bassist and me. We settled the music and lyrical base and a short time after Ernesto Riols joined the band as our lead singer.
How did you come up with your band name?
We wanted a name related to Norse mythology and after some research Helgrind was the name we chose.
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
I’m from Cuba and the scene here is very small and mostly influenced by American Metal and Hardcore styles so it’s not common to see bands that sound like us in our country.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
We released an EP in November 2020 called “The Tragedy Of Túrin Turambar” and recently, our label, Black Spark Records, are doing the physical release of our latest LP “Return To Motherland”.
“The Tragedy Of Túrin Turambar” (Full EP)
‘Rusalka’ (Official Single, taken from the album “Return To Motherland”)
Who have been your greatest influences?
And many many more…
What first got you into music?
For me, it was in high school, when I started to listen to bands like Children of Bodom and Arch Enemy!
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
For me personally, with Alan Averill from Primordial!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Wacken Open Air! My dream is to get there for our own worth because it is the biggest metal fest in the world!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Well, I never received anything from a fan hahahaha is that weird enough?? Hahaha!!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Thanks for the support, the band are nothing without you, we really appreciate it \m/!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Alexi Laiho no questions about it, he and COB were my main influence when I started to play guitar.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Playing concerts and to hang out at festivals and I really really hate to carry my guitar haha!
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
The digital sound, I think it kills all the feeling in music.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Draconian Time” – Paradise Lost
“Blood On Ice” – Bathory
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
It depends on what purpose you have but I think physical CD’s have more value than digital.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
It would be definitely to open a concert for Besatt, in 2018, when they come to tour in Cuba!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Well, I work as a waiter because we do not live from our music, but I dont really know, maybe a skater or youtuber haha!!
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
All the guys in the band haha! Now that I think about it, we’ve never had a dinner party all together before.
What’s next for the band?
We are now in the process of composing our third album and we have really ambitious plans with it.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
We are on Bandcamp and YouTube also our label put us on Apple Music, Spotify and Amazon Music.
