Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Zaanstad, Netherlands based Death Metal band, Dauthuz. Huge thanks to guitarist, Dennis Jak, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Dennis and I play (lead) guitar. Dauthuz was founded about 6 years ago after I stopped with my other bands (Nembrionic, Unlord, Consolation, Cardinal, FuckFace). I asked my pal Hans Bijland to start an old school Death Metal band. At first Marcel from Putrefied would be our vocalist, but he decided he didn’t want to enter the music scene again. We asked Robbe from Disavowed and he did our first release (self-titled EP). That was received pretty good. After that, we parted ways with Robbe and Melle (drums). Due to personal circumstances, they couldn’t stay in the band.

We asked Nick de Vet and Manoloxx to enter the band and they did. We made a new record, “Destined For Death” (with Melle on drums) and started gigging a lot. Till Corona…During Corona we changed line-up again, and again due to personal circumstances (work, distance etc.). Emiel Selderbeek and Bas Polder entered the band and together with the new material and mix/master from Kohlekeller Studio in Germany we were able to produce a killer new album called “Cold”.

How did you come up with your band name?

We are an old school Death Metal band and we needed something with that vibe. I found out that Dauthuz was the old English name for death. And Chuck being my main hero, it was a no brainer. Gerrit Rijcken made the logo and used Old English as the basis. If all were meant to be!

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from the Netherlands. We have a strong metal scene with bands like Pestilence, Sinister, Asphyx at the top and bands like Putrefied Corpse, Menschwalsch, Abrupt Demise and Infantry in the underground. I even think we have some sort of Dutch sound.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We released our new album “Cold” on the 5th of March. We really made a big step with this one.

‘The Apocalypse’ (Lyric Video)

Who have been your greatest influences?

That would be Chuck from Death and Jeff and Kerry from Slayer. But ,also, Patrick from Pestilence, Trey from Morbid Angel and Possessed have been of great influence.

It all started with Van Halen, Maiden and Sabbath. Then Megadeth, Agent Steel, Overkill, Anthrax etc…

What first got you into music?

I borrowed an old fake Strat from my friend Marco (Nembrionic) and I think a DS1 from Boss. Plugged it into an old ghetto blaster and I was sold! Within a week I put together a band and formed the predecessor of Consolation (Gore Flix).

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

Probably a band like Metallica. I always wished that they would make an album with only faster tracks. Like ‘Battery’, ‘Fight Fire With Fire’, ‘Hardwired’ etc…

That album I would make with them. The last record is so fucking awesome and James sings better than ever. They get a lot of shit from people, and I agree to some point. But for me they have rehabilitated themselves.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Hellfest. It looks so fucking awesome and I see so many great bands playing there. And Obscene Extreme, it’s just THE festival of the extreme.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Lots of lovin’. I will leave it at that!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

A band and its fans are a whole. We need each other to flourish. We need fans for motivation and a purpose. And together we create great memories live. Good times, together.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Chuck (Death), off course and Jeff (Slayer).

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Writing new songs and hearing them when they are ready. That first time together as a band that we heard “Cold”, fucking awesome!

What I don’t really like is the re-recording from my demo’s. That’s why these days, when I write the song, that’s the Album take. Almost all my guitars you hear on “Cold” is the moment I wrote it.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Transparency of contracts, more freedom in contracts with labels.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Death – “Leprosy”. The production, the riffing, the vocals. ‘Left To Die’ is my all-time favourite song. Goosebumps in the middle (break) every single time!

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

For me all! I don’t discriminate!

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Probably some small venue with 30 or so visitors. I love the rawness of underground venues. Blood, sweat and beers. I played in front of 80.000 people and that was freaking awesome, but to see, smell and participate up close in smaller venues is killer.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I would be a gamer, Hi-Fi freak, video editor or builder of things.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Family first, so always family. Then friends.

What’s next for the band?

Next up is an MCD/split record or something like that. Also, an album from 20 years back from an old band of mine was released in April. FuckFace will finally be released through Brutal Insanity Records (on cassette!). With Dauthuz we already have some tracks for the new mini and will also be writing new stuff.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Wiki says Jaffa Cakes are biscuit-sized cakes. Wiki is good so I will follow Wiki.😊

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Support your metal scene. We need you harder than ever!

Try to stay open-minded to other opinions. None of us have the truth at our disposal. And don’t forget, we will all eventually burn or rot. So, try as long as you live, to live a good life.
