EMQ’s With MATT FINUCANE

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Brighton, UK, based Alternative Rock band, Matt Finucane. Huge thanks to main man, Matt, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hello there – my name’s Matt, and I sing and play guitar. I met the others doing open mics here in Brighton a few years ago, and gradually drew them into my obsession. Now there’s no escape for any of us.

How did you come up with your band name?

Well, it’s just my real name. Maybe we should have a band name, as people tell me it’s hard to pronounce… That’s their problem, though!

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

The UK, which…problems aside…still has quite a healthy scene across all genres, for now anyway. There’s lots of psych and doom metal bands in Brighton and surrounding area, for sure, and quite a few hard rock acts.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

An 11-track album called To The Outer World, which came out on Fri 23 April.

‘A Friend From Far Away’ (Official Video)

Who have been your greatest influences?

The Velvet Underground, The Fall, electronic music.

What first got you into music?

Probably the Velvets. It’s all Lou Reed’s fault.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

Someone non-guitar, to shake things up. How about Clipping.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Glastonbury. Just because it has to be done.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I’m still at the stage where even getting a message off them saying they enjoyed a gig is a pleasant novelty – if they started sending me gifts, I’d have a heart attack.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

It’s ok, I don’t bite.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Prince. I never liked his music that much, but it seemed such a waste when he died.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I enjoy being able to express stuff, in my own time and in my own way, that might otherwise drive me mad. I hate being at the mercy of chancers, con-men, scumbags and hipster wretches.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Less money for the chancers, con-men etc etc, more for the actual musicians.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Raw Power” – Iggy & The Stooges

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I go back and forth on this, all the time. I honestly don’t know – they all have pros and cons (cassettes are probably the weakest link though).

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The last few before lockdown were just getting better and better, more and more intense, and I don’t know if that’s rose-tinted in hindsight because of lockdown, but I’d say it was the very last one: a local gig we did at a small venue called the Prince Albert in late February 2020.  Hope we can pick it up again at the same level.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I’d be a writer. Which in reality, means I’d be cleaning toilets and getting very frustrated with life.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

That’s my idea of hell.  Wouldn’t happen.

What’s next for the band?

Right now, I honestly don’t know – venues are only just starting to get back to me about bookings. I have to keep writing new songs, in the meantime, because quitting isn’t an option.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

At the moment I’m whoring myself out on Instagram, and actually enjoying it. There’s something about the format that focuses people’s attention, where their parent Facebook (which I hate), just disperses it. Links:

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

They’re a biscuit. An unpleasantly soft, chewy one, full of poisons. Biscuits are worse than crack, in my not very humble opinion.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Can’t think of anything except to say thanks for your time, I appreciate it.
