EMQ’s with REACH

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Stockholm, Sweden based Rock band, Reach. Huge thanks to guitarist/vocalist Ludvig Turner, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hi! My name is Ludvig Turner and I am the singing guitar player of Reach. Me and Marcus Johansson met during an audition, the band I was in at the moment was looking for a drummer and Marcus came to us. I remember thinking he was the coolest guy and a great drummer. We got along instantly and decided to start our own thing. We left the band he was auditioning for just weeks in, it was a good decision!

How did you come up with your band name?

When we started writing songs and trying to predict the future of Reach, we both wanted this band to be our place of joy. We said that we would always put the best of ourselves into the music and no matter what we would do what feels right. We would always be Reaching for the stars, a bit cheesy perhaps but that’s how it was. Reach felt right then and still feels right for us. The ever changing vibe in our music is something that defines Reach in my opinion. As we get experienced and or influenced by someone or something that is going to show in our music.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

All three of us (Me, Zouf Ma´Aoui & Marcus Johansson) are all from Stockholm, Sweden. We have a good scene in general I’d say. Music is all over and there are bands and artists making music for most genres. Rock & Metal coming from Sweden, say Scandinavia, is of high quality if I may say so. There are many bands stretching the lines of a genre that’s easy to get stuck within certain frames. I´m proud to be a musician from Sweden and I’m proud of what our little country has given over the years to the listeners of pop & rock in the world.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our new album “The Promise Of A Life” is the third studio album we´ve released. Of Course, it’s our best one as well! The previous album “The Great Divine” was the first album we did as a three piece with me on vocals. I like to think that it was a new beginning of Reach. The first one we released, “Reach Out To Rock” is really nothing of what we are today but we´ve decided to stick with it and keep it in our discography since it is still a part of our history as a band.

Who have been your greatest influences?

When I began playing music as a guitarist my biggest Idol became Gary Moore. I believe he still is. Over the last 10 years I really started appreciating the newer bands such as Muse, Awolnation, Panic at the Disco etc. Bands that experiment and write a bit more controversial music. There is a lot of cool stuff out there and if you dare to step outside the zone of rock n roll you´ll see that there is much more to discover. However, Black Sabbath was the first real band I listened to and the one that made me feel like the meaning of life is to play music.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

I mentioned Muse earlier! They have been a huge inspiration for me and it would be a dream to tour with them. I’d be way too nervous to do anything right but it is still a dream of mine.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

A full Wacken would be very cool! Hehe.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Love… No, but Marcus gets a lot of fanart when he´s like a knight on a horse n stuff! That is really cool!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

We love that they love what we do! We always wish you guys the best and we would like you to keep on listening to music and to keep on attending shows! Performing live is what inspires us to write music and many of our friends think the same. Keep going to shows and we promise to do our very best to make them as good shows as possible!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Chris Cornell. Gary Moore is on the same list and the same placement. Chris Cornell is such a huge influence to me as a Singer and I’m the kind of fan that thinks every song with him singing is a brilliant song!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Performing live is a feeling I only experience doing so. Writing songs is something I get excited about because I love the feeling of recording something and thinking: ”I’ve never heard this before; I’ve created something unique!”. What I hate is when I wrote something that’s shit. I can get stuck in my song writing and not produce a single good song for months. That is terrible because I start thinking that I’ve ”lost it”. I panic for a while but eventually it comes back and all is good. But that time of not being able to write music I think it sucks so much.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I believe it is where it’s supposed to be. I could say that streaming services have ruined chances of income for bands but then again without them we probably wouldn’t have been able to distribute our music world wide. It’s a difficult question and I don’t want to rush into the subject with what is good and bad and what should be changed. We don’t focus too much on the industry like that, I’d say we try to adapt and when there’s a chance for us to make a move that could change something in the industry for the better, we’ll take it!

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“The 2nd Law” by Muse is one of mine!

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I wanna say vinyl to be cool but I stream like 98% of the music i listen to.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

One of the first gigs we did, when Reach became the trio it was supposed to be, was a festival in Warsaw. A huge one with 4 stages and our time was at 10 in the evening on the stage just at the entrance. We had a few thousand people listening and singing along in the sing along (it’s not always like that). It just felt like ”YES! This is Reach and THIS is what we’re gonna do!”

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I’d be working on a boat in Stockholm’s archipelago!

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

One dictator, because that would be interesting. Gary Moore, I could fan girl over him. Jared Leto, tell him how lucky he is to be a freakin model, awesome Singer & a cool actor. Elon Musk, he’s awesome and I’m a space nerd when I’m not rocking out! Last one is for…Roger Penrose. Another nerd guilt guest. I’d Ask him about conformal cyclic cosmology! Sounds strange? It is! Check him out and you’ll see why he’s my last guest.

What’s next for the band?

Touring after summer if it’s possible. If not then new album. I’d like to release a 20 song album!

What’s next for the band?

We have a tour with H.E.A.T. coming up!

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Love me some Jaffa Biscuits!!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for inviting Reach to this interview. It’s been a pleasure and i enjoyed the questions. These things give a little hope of brighter future so we’re happy to do these interviews.

To our previous listeners, thank you for staying with us for almost 10 years and to all our new followers, welcome to our weird little family. We love you!

Cheers / Ludvig
