EMQ’s with HEATHEN KINGS
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Suffolk, England based Epic Metal band, Heathen Kings. Huge thanks to drummer, Joel, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
I’m Joel – I’m the drummer, The band formed a year and a half ago, but with the covid apocalypse and all, we are only just emerging. All four of the band members are songwriters, metal geeks to the core. There’s no history to the band yet, but we are releasing three singles to kick off with. All ‘Lord of the Rings’ themed and very much in the epic/anthemic metal genre.
How did you come up with your band name?
It’s a line from ‘The Return of the King’, Denethor says it before he burns himself alive. Might be a song about that coming soon…
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We are from Suffolk in the UK. The metal scene (and the underground music scene in general) is really very good here. There are some nice venues, good promoters and willing audiences. All pretty cool given there aren’t any really big towns in the county, I feel Suffolk and East Anglia in general punches above its weight.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Our debut release is a single ‘In The Hall Of The Kings’ . It’s a trip into the mind of Théoden, King of Rohan before his final epic charge at the battle of Helm’s Deep. There’s a cool animated vid as well. if you are a metaller and a LOTR fan you’ll love it.
‘A Song For Denethor (Lyric Video) (Brand New Single, Released 27th June)
‘In The Hall Of The Kings’ (Lyric Video)
Who have been your greatest influences?
Tolkien + Iron Maiden are the two towers of influence, but more recently the band and I have been loving Visigoth, Unto Others, Sumerlands, Satan, so I actually think this is a really great time for Metal.
What first got you into music?
My mate bought the single of ‘Original Prankster’ by The Offspring, and he had a CD player to play it on. At 12 years old we listened on repeat.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?
Hansi Kursch from Blind Guardian, firstly he seems like a gentleman and secondly the body of work that Blind Guardian has that focuses on LOTR is second to none. We aren’t aiming at being a themed band or anything but it would be a dream colab for sure.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Gotta be ‘Keep it True’ I’ve never been but I’ve watched loads of bands sets from it on youtube and it really just looks great. If I don’t get to play it, I’ll defo be making the trip anyway.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Sadly, I’m not sure I’ve ever received a gift from a fan, maybe there is still time.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
As we are a brand new band and haven’t released much yet so I’m hesitant to say we have fans, but my message would be, eat more metal.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
If Game of Thrones taught me anything it’s that bringing people back from the dead ruins their character arc completely.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Enjoy gigging, not enjoy, packing up…urgh!
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Eesh only one thing…ok reluctantly I’ll kill streaming, good idea an all but we are getting further and further from a fair deal for artists.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
I like CD.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
No gigs as yet, go away covid!!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I like cooking. So, chef, I guess.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Girlfriend, Mum, Dad, Sister, Cat!
What’s next for the band?
Three Singles coming out over the next few months, then hopefully we will play some gigs, any gigs.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?
Names are important, I don’t see any Jaffa Biscuits!
