EMQ’s with HOLLIN KINGS

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview, with Cleveland, Ohio based Rock band, Hollin Kings. Huge thanks to guitarist, Brandon Kendig, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Brandon Kendig, I play guitar in Hollin Kings. The four of us (Max Ostrowski: Lead Singer, Guitar, Nathan Lapuh: Drums , Dave Royer: Bass) grew up in the same town outside Cleveland, Ohio and started playing together as a cover band under a different name in 2017 then we decided to start writing our own material in 2019.

How did you come up with your band name?

We had about 40 band names written down, Hollin Kings was the only one we didn’t hate and wasn’t already taken. Band names are the hardest thing to come up with.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We’re from Cleveland, Ohio. The rock scene here is fantastic, there are tons of excellent local bands playing shows every weekend.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our latest release is our single “Wicked Love” (September 10th)!

‘Wicked Love’ (Teaser)

‘Hold On’ (Audio)

Who have been your greatest influences?

Scott Holiday, John Mayer, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page.

What first got you into music?

I was 19 when I started playing guitar and I heard ‘Slow Dancing in a Burning Room’ by John Mayer for the first time. After that I was hooked on playing guitar.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Rival Sons.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Bonnaroo would be awesome to play because the line-up is always so diverse and it looks like 4 days of craziness in the best possible way!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Can’t say…haha!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thank you for checking out our music and supporting us!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Jimi Hendrix.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Creating and recording songs with three of my friends. Loading in gear for shows!

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Streaming services should pay artists more per stream.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Queens of the Stone Age – “Songs For The Deaf”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I enjoy Vinyl but downloads are just so convenient.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Whiskey Myers’ Firewater Music Festival.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Construction.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

What’s next for the band?

Write and record album number two.
