EMQ’s with TELMA

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview, with Larisa, Greece based Metal band, Telma. Huge thanks to them for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Our name is Telma and we play metal! Descriptively, we would say that we are playing a combination of modern groove metal with old school elements. Sharp and fast riffs lined with old-fashioned vocals and guitar leads and solos, making the end result both heavy and emotional.

The band began its formation when the two brothers Markos (guitar) and Filip (bass) met Mike (drums) and started jamming. After three or four-months Mike introduced Anthony(vocals) to the other two, whom he knew from a previous band they had. After that we jammed a little harder and the result of that is our first album. We started the recording process in September 2020 with the help from George Margaritopoulos, who is a very close friend and also the producer of “Eternal”, our upcoming album. The album was finished somewhere around April 2021 and in May 2021 the last member was added to our group, Kostas(guitar)! From May until now we have been rehearsing and promoting our work via social media. We can’t wait to start playing some shows and we hope things with the pandemic get better soon for everybody’s sake! And that’s the story of Telma so far!

How did you come up with your band name?

Telma comes from a Greek word which means something like a dead end and it was an idea of our guitarist Markos. It sounded cool and went well with the topics of our upcoming album, as well as our style of music.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Larisa, Greece. The scene in our city is not particularly big but all bands know each other and there is mutual support between us. As for our country, there are awesome metal bands that are showing the way to everyone such as Septicflesh, Rotting Christ and lately some more heavy rock bands like 1000Mods, Planet of Zeus and others that were able to get past Greece’s border and are touring all around the world. Also, there is a big underground scene that many are not aware of but Greece produces a lot of good music. There are many bands that have all the potential to go viral but unfortunately the economic situation in the country has been a real struggle for everyone the last few years and that is not very helpful.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We have released two single video clips, Perfect Storm and Bipolar Distress from our upcoming full-length album which was released on the 20th of August.

‘Bipolar Distress’ (Official Lyric Video)

‘Perfect Storm’ (Official Video)

Who have been your greatest influences?

Some of our greatest influences from the older to the more recent ones are Iron Maiden, Pantera, Nevermore, Alice in Chains, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Lamb of God, Gojira and Tesseract. We all have different tastes in music but these are the most common between all of us and have clearly impacted our music.

What first got you into music?

The specific reason for our members differs but mostly we think it was the era we grew up with where there was a lot of rock and metal music coming out and many bands were forming everywhere.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

Corey Taylor, hands down! (Sorry Anthony).

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

We really like Wacken Festival, Download and Resurrection. But, of course, we wouldn’t say no to any festival anywhere in the world.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

3kg of lamb chops by a local tavern

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Be kind to each other, we aren’t here for long, so better make life easier and peaceful for everyone. And support your local scene!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Dimebag Darrell, because he had a lot more to offer and also because of the way he passed away.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Writing new songs and creating music and of course playing live in front of people. We hate cables that don’t work and drumsticks that break.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Marketing.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Nevermore – “Dead Heart In A Dead World”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

We grew up with cassettes and CD’s but now you can’t ignore the convenience of downloads and the quality of the vinyl. We basically love everything!

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Unfortunately, we were formed during the pandemic and the scene right now is pretty dead in Greece. We have a secret show coming up and we hope to start playing from September.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

The truth is that we are not musicians, not professionally at least. Four of us are engineers and Kostas is an agriculturist. We like what we do but people need some escape, and the band is perfect for that.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Ozzy Osbourne, Carl Sagan, Karl Marx, Jesus Christ and Dwight Schrute.

What’s next for the band?

Next for the band is to start playing shows and showing people our work, same as all the bands that are on pause due to the corona situation.

What social media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

We mostly use Facebook and Instagram for updates to our work, news and shows coming up. Our music will be available on all major platforms such as Youtube, Spotify, Bandcamp, Tidal etc.

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Biscuit!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank YOU for the interview! We hope you enjoy our music, and we hope to come and play a show near you sometime! Peace!
