EMQ’s with SEPULCHRE BY THE SEA

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with UK based One man Atmospheric Black Metal project, Sepulchre By The Sea. Huge thanks to main man Ash, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Ash and I play all the instruments in the band. I formed the project back in 2019 as a way to contribute to the atmospheric and post black metal scene.

How did you come up with your band name?

The project is all themed around Edgar Allen Poe, and the name of the band comes from his famous poem ‘Annabel Lee’.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

I’m from the UK and have moved around a bit, when I formed the band I lived in Bristol which has a great alternative and heavy rock scene.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

My latest release is an EP called “Ratiocinations”, which is coming out on 01/10/2021. I also just released a single and video for a song called ‘Ghost of the Departed’.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Well, Edgar Allen Poe of course. Musically, I’ve been influenced by Mizmor, Panopticon, Deafheaven, Saor, Ihsahn as well as a lot of post hardcore bands.

What first got you into music?

I used to sneak into my Brother’s room when I was a teenager to try and play his guitar. It was the mid-90’s so Nirvana were still pretty big and he had a guitar tab book which I used, to teach myself guitar. There are a ton of grunge bands better than Nirvana I should say!

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Well, I saw that ALN from Mizmor has just started producing, which is very interesting. Otherwise, any kick ass drummer or vocalist would be exciting.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Arctangent, just outside of Bristol is my favourite festival because it’s so eclectic. They don’t often have post black metal bands, but when they do it’s some of the best in the world.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I’m afraid I’ve never received a gift from a fan.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Send me some gifts!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Does Christopher Lee count? Haha, okay maybe Dimebag Darrell.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love learning new things about how to create and produce music, and have the freedom to do it my own way. And I hate it when my equipment struggles and I can’t just play.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I think sometimes we have too many sub genres, but then again, if we didn’t have lots of genres, bands wouldn’t be able to mash them together.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

For Black Metal either Mizmor – “Cairn” or Deafheaven – “New Bermuda”. For music in general, The Cure – “Disintegration”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I collect vinyl here and there, but it’s a bit of an effort to sit down and put a record on so downloads are the best because you can listen to music wherever you go.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Sepulchre by the Sea hasn’t played any gigs…yet.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

The other stuff that I do like podcasting, writing and voice overs.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

I assume this is dead or alive. Probably all writers, like Edgar Allen Poe, Hunter S. Thompson, Philip K. Dick, H.G. Wells and H.P. Lovecraft (if he behaves himself).

What’s next for the band?

Right now, I’m just focusing on the EP release, then hopefully some new merch and then it’s time to start thinking about LP number 2!

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Clearly a cake. They’re made principally of sponge cake!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks for the interview and I hope everyone enjoys the new record!
