EMQ’s with TERMINAL CARNAGE

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Franconia, Germany based Old School Death Metal project, Terminal Carnage. Huge thanks to guitarist/bassist/vocalist, Stefan Walter, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Stefan Walter and in TERMINAL CARNAGE I play the guitars, bass and I also own the role as singer in the band. The project TERMINAL CARNAGE was started in winter 2019/2020 by myself in Wiesenttal, a small community in Upper Franconia, Bavaria, Germany.

The idea to start the project TERMINAL CARNAGE came up approximately one year after the split-up of ADORING HUMAN FLESH (AHF) the former band where I played guitar.

I had my own musical vision apart from AHF, so I started to work on this by myself. At this point I was not able to convince a former band member during the song writing process, so I decided to compose and record the songs just by myself (guitars, bass and vocals). Regarding style there were no limits as I have musical influences all across the metal genre preferring more extreme styles such as Death Metal. The recordings and the mix was finished in spring 2020 just a few days before the first Corona-lockdown happened. I presented the recordings and the artworks I created to Markus (former Drummer of AHF). Markus liked the material and agreed to join TERMINAL CARNAGE. Our Death Metal-duo was now ready to take the next steps…

The drums were played by Markus in the basement of his house while I was doing the recording job sitting in the corner of the room hitting the record button and drinking beer 😊

The whole drum recording took place in various sessions and was finished end of summer 2020. After that Markus and I worked on final arrangements and at one point reached the state of mutual satisfaction regarding the mix. Now a mastering engineer was needed to give our debut THE SICKENING REBIRTH the required, final polish. The choice for the mastering job fell on Simon Hammer (REBOUND STUDIO, Nuremberg) after having received a great sounding test track from Simon.

All the recorded tracks were shared virtually with the mastering studio due to Corona and the shit involved, such as dusk-to-dawn curfew, etc.

Having various mastered test tracks of the album available we contacted some labels to release our debut “THE SICKENING REBIRTH”. We were really surprised about the positive feedback from the labels but the choice to release “THE SICKENING REBIRTH” fell on GREAT DANE RECORDS in France.

How did you come up with your band name?

TERMINAL CARNAGE in other words means THE FINAL BLOODBATH…before I came up with the name I already recorded some songs. So, the direction for the project was at hand…OLD SCHOOL DEATH METAL

At that point I also realised that the material had the potential to be released and of course a band name was required for this purpose. I searched for a name that on the one hand suited the style of music and on the other hand was able to express that this will be the final musical project from my side… You know, after the spit up of ADORING HUMAN FLESH I was really tired of making music in a common band so I said to myself this will be the final (TERMINAL) thing I will do before I stop making music… I think the combination of TERMINAL (=FINAL) plus CARNAGE (=MASSACRE=BLOODBATH) describing the music was good enough for a band name.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

I was born and live in Upper Franconia, Bavaria. The scene here is alive but in comparison to the scene years ago I think there is a certain regress. A lot of places where metalheads used to meet, party and go to concerts don’t exist anymore, but as I said the scene is still alive, somehow lurking in the dark, waiting to attack 😉

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

As mentioned before, the choice to release “THE SICKENING REBIRTH” fell on GREAT DANE RECORDS in France. Raphael, the guy from GREAT DANE RECORDS who is in charge for us, is a companionable partner, music fan and death metal maniac as we are. In a first step GREAT DANE RECORDS offered us to release the album as digipak CD and digital download.

Who have been your greatest influences?

To speak for myself, my influences are so widely diversified that I have to smile if my music is compared to one or two specific bands. Of course, there are bands out there who influenced the way I play guitar but on the other hand I never really played cover songs or was nailed to a certain style of playing…so in a way, it’s my way!

In case of TERMINAL CARNAGE, I would say and also support people who have the opinion we sound like a mixture of BOLT THROWER, OBITUARY and ASPHYX. Due to some melodies also, PARADISE LOST I would like to mention…AUTOPSY, NECROPHAGIA, MONSTROSITY, MORBID ANGEL and CELTIC FROST are also influencing our music if I quote people describing our style. Somebody recently said we sound like the TYPE O NEGATIVE of Death Metal which I think is funny…

What first got you into music?

An artwork on a tape (MC) when I was at market with my grandma…I asked granny to buy me the tape, a compilation with some 80’s hard rock/metal sound on it. In the early 90’s tapes were traded and shared in the school bus, so I got aware of many great bands and styles and metal became my absolute favourite.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I am not sure…I like the collaboration with musicians I know personally. I need people to rely on. Anyway, to name somebody – Peter Tägtgren comes to my mind. I think Peter is a great musician and producer.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

I would choose the PartySan festival as it is a great death metal festival with amazing bands.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I never received any gifts. Well, long ago somebody threw a beer mug at me while shredding the guitar on stage…was this a gift, I don’t know.😊

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Buy our stuff, support TERMINAL CARNAGE and the true underground bands out there…

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

When we’re talking about a rock star, definitely Lemmy!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I enjoy the process of writing, performing, and recording music… Instagram, Facebook, etc. for me is a real pain in the ass but that’s what you need nowadays to get a certain attention.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

The music industry is an industry, so the target is clear…maximum profit. I think a lot of releases nowadays (especially of long-serving bands) have a lack in songwriting…just standard, boring and 1000 times heard before.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Just one… that’s hard. MORGOTH – “Cursed” comes to my mind. For me this album has a special atmosphere and I still love it.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Definitely vinyl.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Gigs under the banner TERMINAL CARNAGE have never been played as we are acting as a duo at the moment. Let’s see if we come up with a live line-up at one point.

Of course, Markus and I played in various bands before and always enjoyed playing live. I prefer playing festivals as this is always something special but of course a good club show sometimes kicks ass even more…

For me playing on the 2nd stage of the MetalCamp festival 2011 in Slovenia was a great experience. Playing on a festival headlined by SLAYER and your band name (I was a member of WARLIKE DEATHSTRIKE at this time) printed on the festival shirt is of course amazing…

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Music is a huge part of my life and a hobby consuming most of my leisure, but my daily business is office work in a company.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Good friends and family…

What’s next for the band?

We will release a special song via our label GREAT DANE RECORDS in autumn 2021 and also a cover song (OMEN III by Magical Affair) introducing a female guest singer which will be issued on our Bandcamp profile latest beginning of December…

Our 2nd album we are planning to release beginning 2022. Most songs are written, and we are in the middle of the recording phase. The album title is fixed and the artwork in preparation…if you like “THE SICKENING REBIRTH” prepare for a whole lot more!

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
