Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Michigan/Texas US based Death Metal project, Void Collapse. Huge thanks to Terry Oberson, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Terry Oberson, I do everything but play the drums. I’ve been putting everything together for the past ten years or so, I worked with a different drummer early on, but it wasn’t really a fit. I met Shane through a message board, and we work together really well. He is one of my favourite drummers I’ve ever heard, and I’m really glad I found him.

How did you come up with the band name?

It’s from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Lol.

What Region/Country are you from, and what is the Rock/Metal scene like there?

We are from the United States. I imagine it’s like anyplace else. I’m from Michigan where Black Dahlia Murder is from, and they play here pretty regularly. I go to about one show a year. I’m older now, and have been to a lot of them in my life. So, I just go when a there is someone I want to see.

What is your latest release?

We just released our second album “Gwenda”. It’s the first in four. We’re doing an album for each queen of the tarot. Gwenda is the Queen of Wands.

‘Glass Furnace’ (Video)

Who have been your greatest influences?

Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Cryptopsy, Bjork, The Beach Boys, countless others in all types of music.

What first got you into music?

The radio, Motown, or The Beatles.

If you could collaborate with any current band or musician who’s would it be?

Kurt Ballou, or Erik Rutan.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

We’re not a live band unfortunately. We live in separate states, and our lives don’t really allow us to. I just watched Nasty at Wacken and that was pretty crazy, so I’ll pick Wacken.

What’s the weirdest gift you’ve ever received from a fan?

I haven’t yet, and don’t really want to. Lol.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thanks to everyone who has checked us out. Past, present, and future.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

MCA from the Beastie Boys.

What do you enjoy about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I enjoy creating, and making what’s in my head take a physical form. There isn’t much I dislike.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

It’s sort of like life, it’s just the way it is. Everyone is on the same playing field, and you have to figure out how to navigate it. Everything seems to happen the way it should good or bad.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums.

Blink 182 – “Enema of the State”.

What’s best? Vinyl, cassettes, CDs, or downloads?

Downloads, or Vinyl. Streaming is best in real life, and Vinyl for collecting, and playing video games to.

What’s the best gig you’ve played to date?

I’ve never played out.

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing?

Playing music is my extra-curricular activity. I work for a chemical plant, raise two girls, and spend time with my girlfriend. That’s my life.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Queen, so my 10 year old daughter can talk their ears off with questions about “Hot Space”!

What’s next for the band?

We have a split with Before the Storm We Flourished coming soon, a Guns ‘N Roses cover, and I’m starting the next full length right now.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Our main thing is Instagram, and Facebook. We’re on all the streaming services, and Bandcamp.

Jaffa Cakes? Are they cake or a biscuits?

I had to look this one up. They’re exactly what I thought they would be. I would say biscuits. I would like to try them though.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything you’d like to add?

We really appreciate the opportunity to do this, and a big thanks to anyone who has checked us out, and a big thanks to you.
