EMQ’s With Vultur

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Italian Black Metaller, Vultur. Huge thanks to their Vocalist/ Guitarist, Nicola, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hi, I’m Nicola, I’m the vocalist and I also play guitar. Vultur is a Black Metal band that deals with occultism, black magic, superstitions, paganism and witchcraft from our home island: Sardinia. We formed in 2005 and our discography includes two albums, some demos, EPs and various splits with other bands; the third album is currently being prepared. We played lots of live shows, especially in Sardinia, with local bands and other more famous ones. In 2017 we did a mini tour in Chile, during which we shared the stage with the historic Blasphemy.

Currently the band is made up of me, vocals / guitar; Lorenzo, drums; Nicola, guitar; Maristella, bass. Since November 2023 we are in I.D.I.A.’s management roster.

How did you come up with your band name?

Vultur is Vulture in Latin. We were looking for a short and effective name, easy to memorise… the one of a scavenger, who flies alone in the skies looking for corpses, was perfect.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We come from Sardinia (Italy). There are here many valid groups like in many other corners of the world, our disadvantage is living on an island, but this gives us the determination to be more determined.

What is your latest release?

The latest release was an EP / mini “Sa Processioni de is Mortus”, which can be found on YouTube.

Who have been your greatest influences?

The influences are many: from Classic Heavy to 80’s Thrash and all the Black and Death of the 90’s. Our reference bands are Mayhem, Dissection, Bathory, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Tormentor, Morbid, Mortuary Drape, Rotting Christ, Absu, Sarcofago, Enslaved, Satyricon, Sodom, Mercyful Fate, Master’s Hammer and many others.

What first got you into music?

There wasn’t a specific moment. I’ve always been struck by the sound of the electric guitar and I think listening to “The Wall” by Pink Floyd as a child had a huge influence.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Many bands would like to collaborate with ‘Sto Cazzo’, a well-known occult musician and misanthrope of the Mediterranean scene (black  Italian humor!). I’m happy with little and launch an appeal: Tom G. Warrior, if you want to record a new Hellhammer style album, contact me!

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

I would like to play in an old cemetery, inside the catacombs, or in an old medieval castle.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Nothing special, an animal bone. I would like to receive a human skull.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Be more gloomy and don’t follow trends.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Euronymous from Mayhem.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

The sense of freedom and being able to express myself in my own way. I hate being tied to money and not being able to have all the equipment I would like.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Popular and accessible prices for everyone. Music is art, culture, not a squalid disposable product.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” by Mayhem.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl: they are large, when they spin they seem alive and it is fascinating that a needle passing between the grooves emits music. The cover can then be observed in every detail. For me they are a complete artwork.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The gig in Santiago de Chile in 2017. It was the largest and most professional concert we attended.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

The dead man because I would have committed suicide long ago.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

I’m antisocial. I prefer loneliness.

What’s next for the band?

The same of my life goal, which is to continue making records and playing live for as long as we can.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

A pizza!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks to you for the interview, we have a new album that will be released at the end of 2024, follow us and we’ll see us live soon!
