It’s been five long years since “party doom” riff merchants GURT released their last crushing opus “Bongs of Praise”, now on June 7th 2024 they are set to return with their latest, crushing-ist opus yet, “Satan Etc”.

The Band has been through a lot since then, personal loss, welcoming life into the world and enduring the pandemic, GURT have come back with a more aggressive sound than before, but still not taking themselves too seriously, lead single “Knife Fever” for example, a song about a bodged vasectomy (cross your legs gents), is a love letter to the geriatric surgeon that operated on vocalist Gareth Kelly. Now I do not know the in’s and out’s of this story but the thought of an incompetent surgeon taking a knife to one’s member really is a harrowing story.

Songs like ‘In For A Penny, In For A Pounding’ and ‘Appetite For Construction’ really show the musicianship of GURT, everything is so precise but is played with a swagger that makes it sound effortless, around the 2 minute 30 second mark on the latter, is a beautiful sounding middle section, the bass punching through and anchoring you to the ground as the Guitar soars with melody, the drums syncopated rhythms are almost jazz like.

I really can’t wait to see this album played live, ‘Doi Of The Doid’ is guaranteed to get your head moving and a pit opened, and the more I listen to this album (4th time through now) the more I’m hooked, vocally this release is abrasive but catchy, and I can’t believe I’m saying this about an album with a song called ‘Sandworm Fleshlight’ but.. there is a maturity to the songwriting.

In a world where everyone is pretty fucked up, GURT have made a brutal Sludge album with some humility and a tongue in cheek attitude, it will make you smile and the riffs will make you gurn… and you will love every second of it.
