EMQ’s with BOVEDA DEL SOL

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Catalonia, Spain based Empirical Space Doom project, Boveda del Sol. Huge thanks to Jordi Vaquero for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Boveda del Sol, it is my solo project that I started around 2014, wanting to do music on my own apart from playing different instruments in other bands, the idea was to develop my creativity in all sides, both writing all the instruments, as playing them, as well as recording, mixing and mastering everything.

I play what I like to call Empirical Space Doom, as it is a mix between doom metal and space rock, but based on improvisation and creating music on the spot.

How did you come up with your band name?

I was looking for something a bit different to the names in my previous bands, but also wanted something spacey, and inspired by the name in Spanish of an Isaac Asimov book I chose Boveda del Sol.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

I’m from Catalonia, Spain.

The scene is quite good here, there are a lot of great bands making awesome music, sadly it’s really difficult for bands to go big, and there aren’t many venues to play with affordable prices, this year has been specially hard in that regard, but the scene is awesome, you have everything, from stoner rock to death metal!

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

“Traveler Between Worlds”, an EP I wrote and recorded during the confinement in Spain.

I wanted to release my second LP this year, but as I wanted to take it to the stage, it was impossible with the pandemic, then I decided to do a two track EP and release it for free.

‘Traveler Between Worlds’ (Official Visualizer)

Who have been your greatest influences?

Oresund Space Collective, Isis, Ufomammut, Opeth.

What first got you into music?

Listening to lots of Deep Purple when I was a kid, then Sepultura, then lots of heavy metal and so on!

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Hard to choose! I guess Sumac or Oresund Space Collective.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Hellfest, love that festival, have gone some years and the place is great!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Can’t recall anything really weird right now!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Go listen to more music and buy some albums!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Death. Chuck Schuldiner needs to resurrect!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Being able to create music you like, and have other people loving it.

I hate having to load heavy and bulky stuff!

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

The small amount of money most artists make.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Isis – “Panopticon”

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

A high-quality WAV file will be better, technically, but I prefer vinyl, the masters are usually a bit better!

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I’ve only done a Drone set with this project, and that was really rad, but I guess Surnia Fest playing bass for Fuzz Forward, that festival was amazing!

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Audio engineer! Although that might be cheating, that’s my main job!

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Jim Morrison, Jimmy Hendrix, Chuck Schuldiner, Isaac Asimov and Carl Sagan.

What’s next for the project?

Finishing the second LP, finding musicians and taking this project live!

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Mainly Bandcamp, Instagram and Facebook.

www.instagram.com/bovedadelsol/
www.facebook.com/bovedadelsol

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Some people even say they are currency! But for me, biscuits, too small to consider them cakes!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you, guys, for sharing my music! Hope to have much more music to share soon!
