Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with São Paulo, Brazil based Fasthrash Metal band, Andralls. Huge thanks to vocalist/guitarist Alex Coelho for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Alex Coelho I am guitarist and vocalist of Andralls, we have been on the road since 1998. The history of the band started before that date that I mentioned. It all started at school in 1994, when I, Xandão and Eddie started playing to get some covers like Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica. Then we realized it was getting good and we started to write our own music.

How did you come up with your band name?

The name Andralls came from an idea of a friend who was going to our rehearsals, and one day he said to us that we were playing like fire and suggested to put the name ANDRALLS which is a building that caught fire in São Paulo in 1973. Then we liked the idea and started using it.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from São Paulo, from the west side of the city. There have always been many bands here, such as Ratos de Porão, Pentacrostic, Fabio Jasko guitarist from Sarcofago. And to maintain the tradition of thrash metal. The metal scene in Brazil is good; the biggest problem here is that we don’t have the same tradition of doing shows from Monday to Monday. Here, the houses only work from Thursday to Sunday, so it makes it harder to schedule some shows.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our latest CD came out last year and is called “Bleeding For Thrash”; it has 10 songs, and a very intense CD, because it marks my return to the band, the departure of the founding bassist of the band Eddie Carlos and the entry of Felipe Freitas. This CD has a lot of history involved in glory and loss. Like my victory over throat cancer. When we were writing, I was diagnosed with it and I had to have surgery in a hurry to try to beat this damned disease, and I managed to win.

Our big loss was the death of Fabiano Penna who played and produced several Andralls CD’s. It was a very strong back for us to lose him. He had just returned from a tour of Europe, with his band Rebaellion and when he arrived in Brazil, he arrived already sick.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Our greatest influences have always been the great British Heavy Metal bands like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. Then we met Thrash metal and our life ended there. hahaha

Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica and Sepultura are our great heroes.

What first got you into music?

Since the beginning in 1994, we always tried to put our brand, and little by little, it appeared. The speed of all the songs, were very different from the thrash metal practiced at the time, so we realized that this was our differential. So, we made our style called FASTHRASH!!!

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who could it be?

We helped several bands here in Brazil like Corpsia which is a band of friends from Londrina that has been on the road for some time and we are always in touch to help them. And a big band would like to have contact with them again is Judas Priest. We did 3 shows with them in 2001 on the Demolition tour. It was fantastic!!!

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

We have already had the opportunity to play at some festivals around the world, plus everyone’s dream and play at Wacken open air, it is simply the biggest metal festival on the planet.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Once I got a cross from a fan. He said he had taken it from the cemetery where his father was buried. Until today I did not understand why I got this gift. Hahaha.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

I always speak to believe in your dream. If we don’t do that we die at the same moment. A man without an ideal, and a man without a soul. The worst thing is to abandon everything we like, for one person, for a family tradition. Anyway, when we abandon what we love we die at the same moment.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Surely, it would be DIO, he was the greatest metal singer of all time, I saw him live here in Brazil a few times, and I wish I had seen him a lot more.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Music is magic, when you are on tour, each day is a different experience, a city a different stage, you wake up and play at completely local times, very different from a life that many need to live to have their money. What I hate most is the end of each tour, staying at home and very boring. Hahahaha.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I would make things equal, even today those who have more resources (money) can manage more, talent is no guarantee that you will get along.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

AC/DC – “Black In Black”
Megadeth – “Rust In Peace”
Slayer – “South Of Heaven”
Iron Maiden – “The Number Of The Beast”
Black Sabbath – “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”
Dio – “The Last In Line”

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD´s or Downloads

I love Vinyl until today; I have and listen to them. My order would be Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s and Downloads

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I played several outstanding shows in my life as one in the northeast of Brazil in an acoustic shell, more than 4 thousand people came to see us. There was a tour in Chile that was fantastic; they are metal fanatics. There were also shows alongside Exodus, Judas Priest and other festivals that we play such as the Barrosselas Metal Fest in Portugal.

Anyway, it is a difficult question to answer. Hahaha

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I unfortunately do not live exclusively with the band, so I have to have another profession, now I work in a hospital, taking care of the work safety of all employees who work there, my mission is let work accidents in the smallest possible number. I am also studying. I am in the college of oil and gas engineering, also trying this new area.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

I would invite my band brother, and all Andralls fans.

What’s next for the band?

This year we were going to do a big tour of Brazil, I had already booked more than 20 dates in a single month. We were also already planning our first tour of the USA and then Europe. But, like the planet stopped we had to stop too.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

We are on all digital platforms; all our CDs are available to listen.

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

For me it is a cake. Hahahaha.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

I thank you for the attention and the questions, I want to ask you to follow Andralls more and more, we have been on the road for more than 22 years and we want to stay 30 years more. We love music and everything it provides us and we just have to thank you all for that.
