EMQ’s with NIGHT GOAT
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Canton, Ohio based Dark Noise Rock band, Night Goat. Huge thanks to lead vocalist Julia Bentley for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Julia Bentley, lead vocals/tambourine like a banshee
All of the Night Goat band members have all been around/ in the local music scene in Ohio for years, coming from diverse musically influenced backgrounds and tastes.
How did you come up with your band name?
We are all fans of the Melvins (‘Night Goat’ is a Melvins song), and also, we enjoy all things dark and horror related.
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
Night Goat band members are all from the Midwest; Canton, Ohio. The metal/rock scene in Canton is pretty diverse and carries a following throughout the NE Ohio region, from Canton to Akron, Cleveland and into Youngstown and Pittsburgh. Canton’s main music venue is a rock venue called “Buzzbin,” located smack dab in the middle of the pro Football Hall of Fame parade route and arts district in downtown Canton. In a city full of tourists and sports lovers, the music scene is alive and thriving, not just coexisting.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Ghost Hello/Night Goat Split EP! Released by Interstellar Smoke Records!
Split release with the band “Ghost Hello” (from Akron, Ohio)
‘Cult’ Official Video
Who have been your greatest influences?
The Jesus Lizard, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Helmet, Unsane, Chelsea Wolfe, CRAW, Melvins, WHORES, SLEEP, Cherubs, the Cramps, Danzig, Samhain, Motorhead, Between the Buried and Me.
What first got you into music?
Family first got me personally into music. Uncles, cousins, parents, brothers…everyone had music going on somehow and it overflowed into my life and probably saved me in the long run. I turned 16 in 1995, so all of the music from the late 80’s throughout the nineties heavily influenced how I express myself vocally these days…along with the insanity of the world we live in.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
It would be awesome collaborate with SLEEP.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
South by Southwest, Psycho Las Vegas, Coachella would all be dreams come true. To play for that many people in a crowd would be an amazing symbiotic art experience!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
The weirdest gift I ever got from a fan was their shirt…specifically to help wipe the makeup out of my eyes after it all ran down all over my face during the set. Which was gross…but I did it anyways.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I enjoy the release and pure high from exploding onstage…I mean, it’s not lady-like after all in everyday life. I also hate that about it. I hate that on stage is the only acceptable place to release the stuffed in, packed up emotions from my standpoint in this moribund world. I guess that makes me ambidextrous LOL.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
More acceptance of unique genres of music as “Art” and less watering down of original raw, in your face music to try and make it mainstream. Like…just let it be!
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
One of my all – time favourite albums is “Badmotorfinger” – Soundgarden.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Vinyl is definitely the best to hear music how it was intended to be heard. It’s definitely the closest to how my own voice sounds to me, while I’m singing, if that makes sense.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
My favourite show was December 12, 2017 opening for WHORES in Canton, OH at Buzzbin. It was also my birthday!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Painting lots of gigantic paintings and murals and being a social worker still.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
These days? I would want to talk to , MLK Jr., Tori Amos, Dalai Lama, George Carlin!
What’s next for the band?
A tour in the future and another album.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?
Neither, they are a cookie!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks for checking us out! Everyone stay safe out there!
