EMQ’s with THE CURSE OF MILLHAVEN

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Belgian based Death Metal band The Curse Of Millhaven! Huge thanks to guitarist Jeroen Debruyne for taking part!

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Our biography:
THE BEGINNING – 2012-2014
2012 was the year THE CURSE OF MILLHAVEN was formed in the trenches around Ypres (Belgium).
THE CURSE OF MILLHAVEN played its first ever gig, by joining ABORTED on the Belgian date of the ‘GOREMAGEDDON – 10 YEARS ANNIVERSARY’-tour.

VESTIBULE OF HELL – 2014
In early 2014 the band entered CCR STUDIO in Zulte (BE) to record a total of 10 songs, containing different stories about the 9 layers of hell by Dante Alighieri. The full length was mixed and mastered by Kris Belaen at CCR studios as well. In July 2014, a videoclip was released for the song ‘SIMONY’.
A bunch of shows and festivals were played for the release of “Vestibule of Hell”, containing the sold out CD-Release show, Ieperfest 2014, support for Vital Remains and Evil or Die fest 2016.

PLAGUES – 2017
In early 2017, THE CURSE OF MILLHAVEN entered HEARSE STUDIO in Heule (BE), to start recording “Plagues”. Mastering was done by Wojtek Wieslawski at HERTZ STUDIO in Poland. During the promotion of this new EP new videoclips were released for the songs ’BLACK DEATH’ and the title track ‘PLAGUES’. “Plagues” was the culmination of everything the Ypres quintet have worked towards since their inception, pushing every aspect of their sound to the next level.

THRESHOLDS – 2019
Nearly two years later the band completed the writing and recording process of 9 brand new songs. This new album, entitled “THRESHOLDS” contains a much darker and more aggressive sound, ready to reach a new audience and bring THE CURSE OF MILLHAVEN to another level.

TCOM is Jasper Lobelle (Lead vocals) – Bram Dewilde (Bass / Backing vocals) – Kurt Mylle & Jeroen Debruyne (Guitars) – Bart Rambour (Drums).

How did you come up with your band name?

It is a song from Nick Cave’s Murder Ballads album where a young girl Loretta, but she prefers Lottie, terrorises a small town called Millhaven. The contrast of the joyful tunes with the murderous, psychopathic lyrics fits perfectly well with our band.

What country are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Ieper, in Belgium. Ieper was once known as the birthplace of hardcore with bands like Congress, Liar, etc. The scene was very large in these days (90’s – early 2000’s), but has diminished. A lot of smaller shows are planned, however there more likely to be hardcore. For death metal there aren’t a lot of shows 😊.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single or Video)

A full album called “Thresholds”. It contains 8 songs and an acoustic interlude.
We made a videoclip of the second song of the album ‘Shelter’:

Who have been your greatest influences?

Aborted, The Black Dahlia Murder, God Dethroned, Misery Index, etc!

What first got you into music?

Some of us are playing long time instruments, others started because of friends and others just needed another hobby rather than going to bars 😉.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I think it would be one of our greatest influences: Aborted, God Dethroned, The Black Dahlia Murder 😊.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Wacken Open Air as it is the largest festival in our neighbourhood. It is known for having a great audience looking to have a great time!

If we look a little closer, you may say Graspop Metal Festival or Alcatraz, these are a little smaller than Wacken, but certainly not lesser!!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

A black thong… which Jasper (lead vocals) wore in our video of “Plagues”:

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Come and watch us, enjoy, we are here to entertain you 😊.

If you could bring one Metal/Rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Definitely Chuck Schuldiner or Dimebag Darrel!!!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Love – Playing live shows, seeing the faces of people enjoying your music.
Hate – Getting low response from some bookers. We put a lot of effort in calling/contacting/mailing/marketing packages. However no response is demotivating. But hey, we won’t give up; we keep contacting bookers and venues!!

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

The large investments you need to make as an unknown (or lesser known) band. While it used to be about a hardworking band performing great music, it is the band which has the most money and connections who gets the most airtime/visibility.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

N/A

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I personally would say downloads as everything is in the cloud these days. However some of our band members and a lot of friends really like the Vinyl part!

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

For me personally Antwerp Metal Fest and a very small show in Bruges in the very beginning! We didn’t expect anything from this gig, but we gave it all and got all in return. The people went completely crazy and we had lots of fun 😉.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Having boring lives probably, although Bram would have probably excelled in Pony dressage!

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

The other 4 bandmembers and a great chef to cook for us!

What’s next for the band?

We have some great shows coming up next year and also a tour.
There’s a new video coming out soon as well.
In any case we want to spread the Thresholds vibe everywhere we can!

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Absolutely no idea, have never eaten, nor seen them 😊

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you very much for the opportunity!!
Kind regards,
Jeroen TCOM
