EMQ’s with WILD PLANES

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with New York City based Rock ‘N’ Roll band Wild Planes! Huge thanks to drummer Andre Jevnik for taking part!

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hey what’s up y’all! My name is Andre Jevnik and I play drums in the wildest band around, Wild Planes. Kris Carmello is the lead singer/guitarist and James Hoag is the Bass man in the band.

The band was founded by Kris and myself a long while ago in community college. It took us some time to find the right members and get things off the ground. We started to get some bigger shows in the New York area which then really got us in gear to find the right mix of members. After some auditioning, we found Jimmy. Well, Jimmy actually found me (Andre) about a year prior to us looking for members. Long story short, luckily we knew Jimmy but hadn’t spoken in a year. There was instant chemistry once we started to perform and write music.

How did you come up with your band name?

So, the name….we had another name similar to what we have now. At the time, we were changing it and had some Facebook likes that we didn’t want to use. Of course Facebook doesn’t make it easy to make changes, the only way we can keep the page and change our name is if we have a near name to the already existing band name. This sounds super confusing, but it’s the way it is.

While we were figuring this out, my mother came up with “Wild Planes” and we ran with it

What country are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from New York, New York in United States Of America! Depending on the state you’re in, the music scene is rich with talent or super flooded like any other scene. The New York scene is pretty cool, lots of indie rock, indie pop and so on. Our neighbouring state New Jersey has a lot of rock/metal in the areas. We play all over and our music fits with Alt Rock, Indie Rock plus Hard Rock. We prefer to travel though and get our feet wet in other cities/states because we get to see what’s out there.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single or Video)

Our latest release is a 5 song EP called “Singin ‘N’ Slingin”. This is our best piece of work we have released thus far. The boys and I truly feel it has the most eclectic influences inside the writing of the songs. We are big fans of all the great bands, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Grand Funk Railroad, Black Sabbath etc: and we feel that we really did mix all of them up to make it our own. All in all, we wrote music that we want to hear. This EP pumps us up before shows, going out on the town, even just getting the day started. It’s pretty awesome when you can listen to your own music and be like…”wow, I can’t believe this is us!”

Who have been your greatest influences?

We love all the great rock bands that put a good stank in the air. Like I was saying before, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin are what we listen to day in and day out. Of course there are so many bands/artists we love and to name em all would take up this entire article. For us though, groovin, cool rock n roll never fails.

What first got you into music?

For each of us it’s different, it was girls, being cool etc: but I can speak for all of us…I think. It’s that first time you get a crowd of people to cheer for you, whether it be a solo at school or kids in your class thinking your awesome banging on the desks. When people look at you and are like “woah” it makes you want to pursue it even more. Once you get that taste of rock n roll, you want it all the time, there’s no going back.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Jeez, this one is tough. As of now, while they are alive… AC/DC. If we could rock a song with those dudes, wow that would be amazing!

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Rock In Rio, hands down! The people are there for one thing, ROCK N F*&$#@! ROLL!!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

To my knowledge, we haven’t really gotten any weird things. A lot of our friends and fans actually got us cool stuff like custom made flasks and stuff for our tour van. I will say, we have had some weird experiences on the road. Homeless people partying with us in our van, being stranded in a city with a dead phone cause you don’t remember where the hotel is, closing out strip joints till 6am in the morning etc. etc: So many wild things have happened, all we can do is smile.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Have a good time all the time! We live one life people, one life. Everyone has their problems and issues but we can also have our fun too and live a little. Try to enjoy each day as it comes and motivate yourself to live stress free.

If you could bring one Metal/Rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

This one is a dooozy, BON SCOTT of AC/DC, damn what we would do to pick his brain about music and life. RIP Brotha!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

The best thing about being a musician is bringing joy to people through music we created. Of course we love the free alcohol, the girls etc. But besides that, it’s the look on people’s faces when they are having a genuine good time. It makes us so proud of what we do. When somebody takes the time to write a message via Instagram or an email thanking you for performing and moving them, it’s truly a special feeling.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

The music industry is always changing and going through waves. I personally think it’s in a good spot now. If we had to make a change, I guess it would be putting more time into new bands/artists even if they don’t have the biggest following.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Hmmm….”Let There Be Rock” – AC/DC
Killer record!

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Definitely CD and Vinyl! But all of these ways of listening have their advantages. I’m not sure about Cassette only cause not too many people have them. Nowadays people are buying Vinyl again and CD’s. Luckily they make cool new record players and even CD players too. Downloaded music is great for Bluetooth to the car and all that. I do think it’s a shame that a lot of car companies don’t even build CD players in their cars anymore! They better change that.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Best show so far was when we performed the ROCKLAHOMA festival two years in a row! So much fun, love you all out there in Oklahoma!

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Ummm….probably dead. Rock n Roll is our way of life, no hobby.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

We would send special invites to:
Ozzy Osbourne
Steven Tyler
Don Rickles
Bon Scott
David Lee Roth

What’s next for the band?

Next up, we will be playing a butt load of shows all over the east coast. We are promoting our new EP “Singin ‘N’ Slingin” and plan on some music videos for the songs within the next couple months. We will also have merch available on our website for people to buy. Then we will be hitting the studio and tracking a few more new tunes for winter 2020.

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Well, everyone knows they are a biscuit-sized cake 😉

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

We appreciate you and everyone reading this article! Thank you for the support and we hope to see y’all on the road, cheers! Let’s get wild!
