EMQ’s with DARK ZODIAK

EMQ’s with DARK ZODIAK

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Eggingen, Germany based Death/Thrash Metal band, Dark Zodiak. Huge thanks to vocalist, Simone, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

I’m Simone and the front woman of the band Dark Zodiak.

The band was founded in 2011 by Dieter (drums) and Charly (guitar), and I joined in 2014.The

current line-up is quite young, Benni still plays the guitar and our new addition is Steffi on bass. She

has been with us since the beginning of the year.

How did you come up with your band name?

Actually, we don’t have that astrological touch, but when we came up with a name, “Zodiak”

somehow sounded good. The “Dark” should make the band name a bit more genre typical.

Incidentally, the spelling with K is intended to mark a distinction from the Zodiac murders and other

bands with similar names.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We come from the deepest south-west of Germany. We have a pretty active Metal family here in

this rural area. We also live right on the Swiss border and Switzerland has a thriving scene. But we

like to play concerts all over Europe!

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our singles we released this year are ‘Do More Say Less’, ‘Ophiuchus’ with official video since

November and ‘2020 A.D.’ with official video released now in December. The complete album

“OPHIUCHUS” will be released on January 30th, 2021.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Dieter and I have been metal maniacs since we were young. We grew up with bands like Metallica,

Slayer, Kreator, Sepultura, Obituary and Death. Charly comes from the blues and Steffi and Benni

more from the Gothic scene. And from that our own style developed.

What first got you into music?

Dieter was already a guitarist in a metal band at the age of 16, and much later he got behind the

drums. Charly also plucked the strings early and was the singer of a power metal band in between.

Steffi trained in the classical direction and Benni played the guitar in rock bands for a long time.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I would like to be on stage with Britta Görtz from Critical Mess and formerly Cripper. Dieter would

love to meet John Petrucci from Dream Theater. And rocking a concert with Vader would be cool

too.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

We actually love the small festivals with a great metal community. But rocking the Summer Breeze

would be great, we’ve been going to this festival for decades. We were there when it started with a

day and a few hundred people.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

When our bassist Sigi left us because he had moved from the area, at his last concert a fan from

Switzerland gave him a “Berner Böllemannli” (a specialty from Bern, a small sculpture made of

onions) from the Bern onion market. He was moved to tears!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Be authentic and true to yourself, take care of yourself and your loved ones, live your dreams and

longings and celebrate with us until you drop!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

The drummer from Dieter’s first metal band, he was his best friend and died at the age of 24.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love to sing out loud, to release all energies in me. And after a concert with partying fans and a

successful aftershow party, I feel happy. And I hate it when the technology doesn’t work. Sometimes

I make up my mind that in my next life I’ll start an unplugged band…but metal wouldn’t be fun that

way.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I would give small, motivated underground bands better opportunities.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Arise” by Sepultura

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

That is hard to say! Vinyl is cult and cool, CD’s have been my number 1 for years and now I find it

really practical when I can listen to my favourite music from my mobile through headphones.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

We played many incredibly great concerts and celebrated Parys! But the Bergisch Metal Festival was

a really successful party when the fans hooked up and formed head-banging rows all over the

concert hall. That was really delicious.

Or the From Thrash Till Death Festival, fans grabbed our bass player to surf the crowd and carried

him into the men’s room…

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

We are only hobby musicians, that means we do other things most of the day. But professional

tourist and vacationer would be nice!

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

My four band mates and Dalai Lama or the Suicidal Angels…and our neighbour, because it could get

loud!

What’s next for the band?

We will release our album “Ophiuchus” in January 2021 and after that we wanted to play concerts all over Europe. But we have to wait and see what Corona allows us…

These are Dieter’s favourite cookies, especially the ones with orange!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Withstand metal freaks!! As soon as it is possible again, we will have the ultimate metal parties. We are already looking forward to it!!
