EMQ’s with PurEnvy

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Australian Metal band PurEnvy! Huge thanks to them for taking part!

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Josip Dane Malkoč and I am a lead guitarist/vocalist in a modern, melodic thrash band from Australia. PurEnvy hail from the steel city of Newcastle, NSW. Fusing elements of thrash metal with harmonies reminiscent of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, PurEnvy have been perfecting their craft for many years, appealing to a wide range of heavy music fans, and attracting a loyal following along the way. After the 2013 release of their first album “As The Light Fades”, PurEnvy focused on refining their style, and released their second album “Redemption” in June 2018. “Redemption” received overwhelmingly positive reviews, including a feature on Wall of Sound’s podcast “Up Against the Wall”. The accompanying video for the single “Deception” has also gained popularity on social media for its creative take on the unique Australian metal scene. PurEnvy have been honing their live performances up and down the east coast of Australia, developing an electric and entertaining stage presence in all types of venues. With two appearances at Sydney’s iconic Steel Assassins festival under their belt, PurEnvy are ready to showcase their music to a wide variety of audiences both at home and abroad.

How did you come up with your band name?

One of the original members had decided on the name prior to myself joining the band.
What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
We’re from Australia. The scene is definitely thriving in specific areas such as Brisbane and Melbourne. Unfortunately in other areas it’s surviving to the say the very least. We believe that we have contributed massively in keeping the Newcastle metal scene alive and it continues to grow with every show we play.

What is your latest release?

Our latest release is Redemption which you can stream here: https://open.spotify.com/album/3SnMYZR9tjRGTGVZ0PYRIY

Who have been your greatest influences?

Metallica, Iron Maiden, Trivium, At the Gates, Iced Earth, All That Remains, Yngwie Malmsteen.

What first got you into music?

The interest was sparked from being in a high school music class and I felt drawn to it. Later on in life I became obsessed with music, especially heavy metal. I grew up listening to punk records from bands like Green Day, Millencolin and Offspring. If I recall correctly a family member first introduced to me to Metallica at a young age and that would be the first time I ever heard Fade to Black. I was blown away, in awe, but I knew that I wanted to pickup a guitar and learn to play.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Definitely Matt Heafy from Trivium! He has been an inspiration to me for quite some time and would love to have the opportunity to collaborate with someone like himself.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Wacken!! The ultimate dream for any heavy metal band!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Hahaha can honestly say that it hasn’t happened yet.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thank you! Knowing that there are people around the world that love the music we create is the most fulfilling feeling I’ve ever experienced.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Cliff Burton…Maybe “Load” and “Reload” never would have happened hahaha.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

The hour that you get to spend performing your art with the people that mean the most to me. Definitely travelling, especially the long hauls in our country.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I’m not quite sure how to answer this question. My apologies!

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“…And Justice For All”, “Master OF Puppets”, “Shogun”, “Slaughter Of The Soul, “Reign In Blood” and “Nocturnal”.

What’s best? Vinyl, cassettes, CD’s, downloads or streaming?

I’m a massive fan of Vinyl and CD’s although I’ve realised that streaming music is more important than what the majority of musicians believe. I think streaming plays a crucial role in growing an artist’s fan base outside the realms of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter and when used to its full advantage services like Spotify become an invaluable tool.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Maryborough, QLD. We didn’t know what to expect from playing there and let me tell ya, our jaws were dropping. I’ve never witnessed a crowd that intense and involved and can only be described as chaos.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I don’t like to think about that haha!

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

James Hetfield, Matt Heafy, Anders Bjorler, Ola Englund and Jacob Hansen!

What’s next for the band?

Complete an East Coast run of shows, write and record a new album and aim to get overseas asap.

What social media links do you use to get your music out to people?

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

I have no idea what they are hahaha!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

I’m glad that I took the time to do this and I thoroughly enjoyed it 

Stay Metal \m/
