EMQ’s with REAWACAN
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with German based Death Metal band, Reawacan. Huge thanks to guitarist/growler, Dan Krieger, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hi, my name is Dan Krieger, and am responsible for all the guitar work and growling.
REAWACAN was founded in 2017 by me and Marco Gebert. Before we both had a musical break for about a decade since we played together in our former band called Lacrima Christi.
With our self-titled debut album in 2019 we had been resurrected with all our passion for extreme music…
How did you come up with your band name?
We knew it must somehow symbolize our rebirth. So, we stumbled upon this old English word – which simply means reawaken. Because of its untypical spelling it is unique and a perfect match!
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We are from Germany. As far as I know we have quite a big scene of all kinds in our relatively small country. You know the WACKEN OPEN AIR for sure – it has developed itself to be the biggest in the world!
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
In fall this year our new EP “Pandemic Coverage & Old Schooling” will be released (October 23rd). It will be accompanied by one or more video productions. So, we pretty much used all the given extra time during the pandemic for being freely creative!
‘Into Proliferation’ (Audio)
Who have been your greatest influences?
Metal-wise all the famous old school masters like Metallica, Slayer, Death, Paradise Lost, Celtic Frost etc.
We are children of the 80’s and therefore also much influenced by all kinds of classic rock and pop of these days, including many of the prog rock projects back in the 70’s…Regarding the reviews for our debut, some people mention even a certain jazz taste in it…?
What first got you into music?
When. I was a small boy, my handball trainer listened to some music wearing head phones. I asked him, what he was listening to. He replied, it is the fairy tale ‘Little Red Riding Hood and the Bad Wolf’. This made me very curious because I knew he was kidding. – I immediately fell in love with what he presented to me: Motörhead, Metallica, Twisted Sister, Saxon and Iron Maiden! Those sounds never left me. So as a teenager I founded my first band ABSZESS…
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
I would like to experiment with some gangster rappers. – Really! I admired all that stuff with heavy riffs back in the 80’s…
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
WACKEN Open Air of course! Just to be a part of history.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
I can’t remember to have got any…
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
‘Metal heads unite!’ A saying by Chuck Schuldiner to remind us all that all the sub genres of (metal) music doesn’t matter at all. Just be true to your own individual taste!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Again: Chuck Schuldiner. I would like to hear what he would be producing nowadays…
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
The most precious gift of making music is the ability to deeply express yourself. There are no limits, no laws, absolutely no holding-back! It makes me sad when people try to define and control everything just to prove something/someone wrong.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Please do not only support the ‘rich’ musicians that already hyped themselves and listen carefully to those many talented freaks out there, whose abilities to spread their ideas are ‘traditionally’ more limited.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Stay Hungry” by Twisted Sister.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Of course, vinyl! None can compete with it as a whole piece of artwork! But I also like the vast sound power of the digital capacities. It is exciting to listen to the differences between analog and digital mixings.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Interestingly it was not the biggest one. It was the CD Release Party with my old band Lacrima Christi nearly 20 years ago. The album is called “Maskenball” and the tiny club transforms into exactly that!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I am a passionate programmer and martial artist. Also, strong forms for expressing myself. Another thing would be working as a movie actor – especially for the weird and mad characters! HAHAHA!!
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
The best parties have been with my fellow neighbours! REALLY!
What’s next for the band?
Releasing and promoting the EP, of course. In the meanwhile, we have already written some songs for the next album…!
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Besides Facebook, it is mainly Bandcamp, and all of the streaming platforms of course.
Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?
A would say it’s a biscuit. Remember it since being a very small child…!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
I would like to say thank YOU for all those interesting questions and your support! Cheers!!
