EMQ’s with EVERLOST
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Moscow, Russia based Modern Metal band Everlost. Huge thanks to Andrey Smirnoff for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Andrey Smirnoff. I’m a vocalist/songwriter/guitarist of Everlost. Also known for working in bands like U.D.O., Dirkschneider.
Everlost was founded in 2001 but our first full-length album came out a few years later (around 2004). Over the 20-year history of the band, hundreds of shows have been played throughout Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Europe, also 5 full-length albums have been released. Now the band is working on the next studio record. Everlost’s style has undergone many changes over the years, but essentially remains the powerful mix of heavy riffs, powerful vocals and catchy melodies.
How did you come up with your band name?
We were looking for some short and catchy word. And Slayer was already taken.
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
Originally, we’re from Moscow, Russia. The Russian metal scene is pretty large, but mostly underground.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
We’ve released a couple of singles recently, called ‘Warrior’ and ‘Supernova’. The most recent video is for our cover of In Flames’ ‘Pinball Map’. The original record celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. It was a heavy influence on Everlost’s music back in the days.
‘Pinball Map’ (IN FLAMES cover) feat. Max Norton
‘Supernova’ (Official Quarantine Music Video)
Who have been your greatest influences?
All the classic metal bands, like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Accept and so on. Another great influence was the melodic death metal scene of Sweden with bands like already mentioned In Flames, Soilwork and Dark Tranquillity.
What first got you into music?
At first, sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. But it quickly turned to sex, beer and death metal.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Wacken Open Air! Because it’s the most famous and the biggest one.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Several years ago, at one of our gigs, we’ve got a plus size bra. For some reason, a person with this gift was a guy!!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Believe in yourself and never give up!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
It would be someone who died before creating his best record. The first one who comes to mind is Chuck Schuldiner.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love to rock on stage, but I hate to be on a stinky bus with a bunch of drunk guys.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
The music industry is created by the people and for the people. One cannot change things he doesn’t like about the music industry without changing the people themselves. But, personally, I don’t like that the industry became oriented too much on single hit songs and doesn’t care about albums being good anymore. While writing albums for Everlost, we’re trying hard to avoid mediocre songs and just throw them away if there are any doubts.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Somewhere In Time” by Iron Maiden.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Market will always be dominated by the products that are easiest to use. That’s why we see the increasing popularity of various streaming services. Vinyl, Cassettes and CD have their own aesthetics though, but it’s mostly collectible items now.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
I think, it was our anniversary gig in Moscow. We’ve even made a live video and a live album out of it, called “XV Years – Live In Moscow”.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Some of us already have jobs and businesses unrelated to musical industry.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, Sasha Grey, Elon Musk and Bernard Arnault to pay for that.
What’s next for the band?
New single and album!
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Mostly, our YouTube channel
And a Facebook page
Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?
We don’t have these luxurious capitalistic delicacies here in Mother Russia. Our gastronomic knowledge is limited to bear meat and vodka.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks for the support! Have a great day everyone! Stay safe!
