EMQ’s with MISTY GREY

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Madrid, Spain based Doom Metal/Hard Rock band, Misty Grey. Huge thanks to guitarist Juan for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hey how you doing? My name is Juan and I’m the guitar player in Misty Grey. We started up in 2011, our main aim was to create a traditional doom metal band, because there were not any in Spain. At last the band was completed in 2012, with a new singer. We recorded two demos and 1 album, then our first singer left, and we got another singer. With that line-up we recorded our 2nd album “Chapter II” in 2017. And now we’ve got another singer and we’re looking out for our next recording sessions very soon.

How did you come up with your band name?

We thought about something which was very dark and gloomy. The mist is always grey, so it basically comes from there.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Madrid, Spain. Our Metal/Rock scene is huge here, therefore there are a lot of bands coming out. Nevertheless, the Doom Metal scene is pretty poor, just a bunch of bands in this style.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video).

As I told you above, our last album is “Chapter II”, recorded in 2017 but released in 2018 on CD. It will be released on vinyl before the end of 2020 indeed.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Mainly traditional doom metal bands. Black Sabbath, Witchfinder General, St. Vitus, Candlemass, Pentagram, Solitude Aeturnus, Pagan Altar and many others. We also have many influences from 70’s and 80’s hard rock and heavy metal outfits.

What first got you into music?

If you mean playing guitar, I started playing Classical guitar, but I loved 80’s heavy metal so my starting point was right there. I loved playing Iron Maiden tunes.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

We are open to collaborate with any band or musician, in fact we’ve got a kind of Project coming up with a friend, so we’ll tell you about it when this thing is getting near.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

We’d like to play at Hellfest, I think it’s the biggest one around these times.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

As far as I can remember, I’ve never received anything from a fan. On the contrary, they always ask me for free guitar picks hehe.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Yeah, we’ll record something soon, fresh music and don’t forget to buy our new vinyl, it’s outstanding!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

I love Phil Lynott, from Thin Lizzy, it would be him, no doubt.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I enjoy playing music, both guitar and bass, but also mandolin and some keyboards. As a musician, you’ve got to keep on improving yourself. And I hate that you can’t live from the music itself, at least in this country.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Music is culture and the governments are not into culture anymore, you can see it nowadays, with the Covid-19 situation. It is awful but it’s what we’ve got.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Well ,talking about doom metal, I would choose the “Bedemon” album, the first Pentagram album and maybe the first Count Raven album as well.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl, sure mate!

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I don’t know for sure. We’ve had some really good gigs, and played along with some important names in doom metal. So, it’s hard to choose one from.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I like to paint, so I would be a painter.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Famous people do you mean? Ough, it’s hard to choose but I’d invite some famous actresses from old times film noir: Lizabeth Scott, Gene Tierney, Gloria Grahame, Barbara Stanwyck…

What’s next for the band?

Recording all our newest tracks, we’ve got 7 from so long so we’re rehearsing and maybe recoding them during 2021.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Facebook mainly, also Instagram, but I don’t have an account myself.

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Hehe, I don’t know. I guess they are more like a cake, what we call in Spanish “bizcocho”.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

I want to thank you for your interview and your kind support. It’s the most important thing nowadays!
